Zendaya Rewears Her 2015 Vivienne Westwood Bridal Gown at The Drama Premiere

When Zendaya stepped onto the red carpet at the DGA Theater Complex on March 17, she was wearing a dress with a decade of history sewn into every seam. The corseted ivory silk Vivienne Westwood gown, off-the-shoulder with a tulle sash that draped around her shoulders and fell down her back, was the same piece she wore to the 87th Academy Awards in 2015, when she was 18 years old and the look became one of the most talked-about, and most contested, of that entire Oscars season.

The occasion was the Los Angeles premiere of The Drama, an A24 romantic comedy about an engaged couple in Boston, due in theaters April 3. The film stars Zendaya alongside Robert Pattinson, who played her fiancé Charlie and arrived in a pink Dior suit with a green button-down shirt and an off-white tie. Zendaya, now 29, explained her archival choice to Variety on the carpet with a line that landed like a thesis statement: "I remembered the saying: 'Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.' So, this is my something old. I thought I'd bring it back and give it new life."

The 2026 version of the look was meaningfully different in the details. Gone were the locs she wore in 2015; in their place, a sleek, side-parted bob. Pearl drop earrings gave way to Chopard diamond chandelier earrings, and her right hand carried a stack of three Chopard diamond rings totaling around 14 carats. On her left ring finger, she wore a diamond engagement ring, reported by Page Six as a Jessica McCormack piece, alongside a slender gold band. The combination of the bridal gown, the engagement ring, and the wedding-themed film collapsed into something almost too neatly layered to be coincidental. Stylist Law Roach, who also helmed her tennis-coded Challengers press tour and her futuristic Dune: Part Two appearances, has called this kind of alignment method dressing. This was the clearest example yet.

The original moment in 2015 had a shadow attached to it. After Zendaya wore the Westwood gown with locs, E!'s Fashion Police host Giuliana Rancic said on air that Zendaya probably "smells like patchouli oil or weed." Zendaya responded publicly via Instagram, calling the comments "outrageously offensive" and saying she wanted to showcase her locs "in a positive light, to remind people of color that our hair is good enough." When she spoke to Variety at the premiere about the significance of the gown, she was direct: "It meant so much to me, this dress. It was such an important moment for myself, for my community, for my loved ones, and it felt right."

Not everyone in the fashion press received the re-wear as a triumph. Red Carpet Fashion Awards acknowledged the charm of dipping into her archive but called the result a rare "just ok" moment for Zendaya, writing that the full-circle story "should have landed with more impact" and expressing fatigue with both the silhouette and her press tour reliance on white.

The appearance also arrived amid persistent speculation about Zendaya's relationship with Tom Holland, who was not at the premiere. The night before, on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, she was asked about rumors that the two had secretly married. "Really? I haven't seen any of that," she told Kimmel, while separately indicating that wedding photos circulating on social media are AI-generated. The engagement ring and gold band on her left hand were the only confirmation she offered, and for now, they were doing all the talking.
