The Coastal Grandmother aesthetic was never really about grandmothers. When TikTok creator Lex Nicoleta coined the term in early 2022, she was mapping something more aspirational: a life lived slowly near water, dressed in beautifully simple clothes, the way Diane Keaton does it in a Nancy Meyers film. The TikTok hashtag gathered over 149 million views by that summer. Chanel's Cruise 2026 collection, staged at the legendary Villa d'Este on the shores of Lake Como, built that exact fantasy at runway scale.

Designed by the house's in-house Creation Studio while incoming creative director Matthieu Blazy prepared for his debut in October, the collection leaned into a palette of cream, sky blue, and sorbet pink that reads as a luxury translation of every Coastal Grandmother mood board. A belted wrap dress opened the show; silk satin scarves, reissued from the archives of longtime house partner Mantero, appeared knotted at the wrist, at the neck, looped through bag handles. Wide-leg white trousers paired with marinière polo shirts and striped palazzo pants anchored the nautical spirit that ran throughout. The formula here is fully replicable. A striped Breton top with wide-leg linen trousers achieves exactly this silhouette. The silk scarf is the single most versatile Coastal Grandmother investment and does not need to be Chanel to read expensive; a vintage silk square from a charity shop, tied loosely at the collar or threaded through a straw handle, delivers the same effect.

The lakeside setting did real editorial work. Sofia Coppola, a longtime friend of the house, directed the campaign teaser on Como's shores, grounding the clothes in cinematic context before the runway show began. The collection nodded to filmmaker Luchino Visconti, whose Villa Erba stood nearby, and to Romy Schneider wearing Gabrielle Chanel designs in his 1962 film "Boccaccio 70." That lineage is exactly where the Coastal Grandmother aesthetic lives: less about age than about a particular ease with dressing, refined by experience. Keira Knightley, seated alongside Lupita Nyong'o and Margaret Qualley for the show, called it "part '30s movie star, part kind of Studio 54 and '70s disco." The dual register matters for real-wardrobe translation: the collection demonstrated how a knit cardigan, pearl strands, and patent leather mules can carry from poolside to a dinner table without a full outfit change.

The bags were the clearest case study in the aesthetic's logic. Straw Flap bags, pool totes with chain handles, and oversized woven totes appeared throughout. Three years on, Chanel staged its Cruise 2026 collection at a lakeside villa that could have stood in for any of those films.
