Jerry Lorenzo has turned the adidas Fear of God Athletics Basketball III into a near-monochrome object: Cinder, Warm Vanilla, Cloud White, $180. The palette is so dry and muted it feels lifted out of a concrete court at dusk, not a neon-lit sneaker wall, and that is exactly why it works.

This is the strongest argument yet that the line has moved past the idea of a straight performance basketball shoe. Fear of God calls the model the “lightest and most resolved expression of the franchise to date,” and the numbers back up the mood: 360 grams, rich suede, breathable knit, plus a bottom-loaded shank for balanced torsion. That sounds like a shoe built to move, but it looks like one designed to be looked at first.

adidas is still framing the Athletics line as a fusion of basketball innovation, design, performance, and lifestyle, and the Basketball III sits right in that overlap. At $180, it lands in the same territory as premium performance shoes from Nike and adidas, but the materials and the stripped-back Cinder treatment push it closer to the luxury end of the spectrum. This is not a loud court shoe chasing highlight reels. It is the kind of sneaker that can handle a pickup run, then disappear under wide trousers and a wool top without looking out of place.

The rollout also tells its own story. adidas brought Jerry Lorenzo in as creative director of adidas Basketball in 2020. The first Fear of God Basketball shoe arrived at the start of 2024, a sequel followed in the Holiday 2024 collection, and the III has been positioned as the next evolution in the numbering, with multiple reports last year describing it as likely the final chapter in the current run. That makes this Cinder release feel less like a random colorway and more like a tightening of the whole project.

Hypebeast also identified a second Basketball III colorway, Wonder Alumina/Cloud White, under SKU KJ5967, which suggests adidas is giving the model a broader lifestyle rollout before the 2026 window fully opens. But Cinder is the one that best explains what this shoe really is. It is a performance basketball silhouette dressed like a muted luxury sneaker, and in 2026 that hybrid stance is the whole appeal.
