A Bathing Ape landed in Canada for the first time on March 6, planting its flag at 1028 Alberni Street in downtown Vancouver with a 3,780-square-foot flagship that doubles as the brand's formal introduction to the Canadian market. The address puts BAPE squarely inside Vancouver's luxury retail corridor, a strip anchored by internationally recognized fashion houses and jewellery names, and the choice is deliberate: streetwear and high-end retail have been quietly merging for years, and BAPE is now one of the most prominent examples of that convergence in the country.

CEO Mahmoud El Salahy framed the opening as a calculated first move rather than a finished strategy. "We're very happy that we're finally coming to Canada through Vancouver as a starting point," he told WWD. "For sure, there will be more opportunities for us in Canada, but we would like to first see how consumers react to our store in Vancouver." The patience implicit in that statement sits alongside an ambitious longer view: El Salahy added that "at some point in the next five years or so, North America will probably become the biggest market for the Bape brand globally."

The store's interior makes the local commitment tangible. The color palette pulls directly from the Vancouver city flag, running through shades of blue, green and yellow meant to evoke the Pacific coastline, the dense coastal forests and the particular quality of light the region is known for. The brand stated its goal was to build something beyond a conventional retail outlet, and the space reflects that intent.

To mark the opening, BAPE debuted an exclusive Vancouver camo capsule collection whose colorway draws from those same flag hues. The drop includes T-shirts, hoodies, sneakers and accessories alongside a curated selection of souvenirs, all produced as limited-edition pieces specific to the Alberni Street location. BAPE has built its global reputation on exactly this model: limited runs, collectible collaborations and exclusive releases that turn store openings into events and storefronts into destinations.

Moss Bemis, BAPE's Head of North America, confirmed the opening weekend went as planned. "Opening on Alberni Street is a key milestone in our North American retail expansion, reflecting our focus on culturally influential markets and strong retail execution," Bemis wrote on LinkedIn. "Huge congratulations to the team on a successful opening weekend — great momentum as we continue to create spaces for fearless self-expression around the world."

Vancouver joins a North American roster that already includes flagship locations in New York, Los Angeles, Miami and Chicago. The brand, which was founded in Tokyo's Harajuku district and now operates more than 40 retail locations worldwide, is moving quickly on multiple fronts: El Salahy confirmed that BAPE also opened its first Korean flagship the same week as the Vancouver launch, and a relocated Miami store was scheduled to open later in March, designed to reflect that city the same way the Alberni Street space reflects this one. For a brand that spent decades building its mythology outside traditional retail structures, the pace of its expansion suggests that mythology is now the product.
