New Balance has found a way to make the dad sandal look almost covetable. The Metallic Silver 9060 Summer mule lands with gleaming overlays, a chunky 9060 sole, a back strap and adjustable laces, turning an awkward-on-purpose hybrid into something that reads less like a compromise and more like a statement.

The shoe’s power comes from the contrast. The 9060 Summer is built as a sneaker-sandal, but the metallic finish gives the silhouette a sharper, more expensive edge, while the mule-like construction keeps it stripped down enough for warm weather. On New Balance Japan’s site, the model began rolling out on March 27, 2026 at 19,800 yen, with a quick-lace system and heel buckle, and multiple colorways were listed in gray, black and white. Several entries were already marked sold out, which only sharpens the sense that this is the sort of hybrid product streetwear buyers will actually chase rather than politely admire.

That reaction makes sense because the 9060 was always built to straddle categories. New Balance introduced it in 2022 as a new expression of the 99X series, drawing from the 990 and 860 and leaning into the brand’s Y2K-era tech aesthetic. The model’s ABZORB and SBS cushioning helped turn it into one of the label’s core lifestyle shoes, and that same beefy, sculptural platform is exactly what gives the Summer mule its authority. In metallic silver, the silhouette stops reading like a retro runner offshoot and starts looking like a summer-ready streetwear object, all shine and volume.

The sell-through also fits New Balance’s larger obsession with mash-ups. The 1906L loafer, which reworks a sneaker silhouette into a classic penny loafer shape, shows how aggressively the brand has been blurring the line between performance footwear and dress codes. The 9060 Summer mule follows that logic with less polish and more edge: a sneaker cut open for summer, then finished in silver so it catches light like jewelry.

That is why this shoe feels more consequential than novelty. The dad sandal has spent years hovering between irony and utility, but the Metallic Silver 9060 Summer gives the category a real stylistic center of gravity: chunky, hybrid, and just strange enough to look new. If the sold-out Japan release is any indication, the warm-weather flex piece may now belong to the mule.
