Here's how to buy one that actually holds up.

Fabric: Start Here, Everything Else Follows

Fabric determines thermal regulation for all-day wear, resistance to creasing that affects commute-to-meeting transitions, recovery after sitting (how the blazer looks at 4 p.m.), and even how light reflects off the surface. That last point matters more than people realize: glossy synthetics read "budget," while matte, textured wools project quiet confidence.

For the professional who commutes daily, the clear hierarchy runs like this:

  • Worsted wool (10-11 oz): Wool remains the gold standard for blazer fabrics due to its natural resilience, temperature regulation, and elegant drape. Worsted wool is smooth, tightly woven, and ideal for structured, year-round blazers; it resists wrinkles and holds sharp lines. Construction: The Hidden Factor That Determines Longevity

Most professionals skip this entirely. They shouldn't. Think of a jacket's construction as three-dimensional: the cloth on the outside, the lining on the inside, and the interlining in between that you cannot see. The interlining plays an important role in how the suit fits and how long it will last — it gives shape to the garment, preventing it from sagging and deforming.

There are three constructions to understand:

Fused: The overwhelming majority of garments sold in retail are made with fused interlining due to its cost efficiency and ease of mass production. The problem: fused construction is less durable; the fused layer can detach over time, especially with frequent cleaning, and lacks the flexibility and natural movement of canvas constructions. That bubbling you've seen around the lapel of a blazer after a few dry-cleaning cycles? That's fused construction failing.

Half-canvas: In half-canvas construction, the jacket uses canvas on the chest, lapels and all the way to the pockets, with the lower part of the jacket being fused. Because it requires less material and labor than a full canvas suit, the half-canvas option is more cost-effective while still delivering significant structural benefits: it's more durable, comfortable, and better-fitting than a fused suit, and lighter than a fully canvassed jacket. For most commuters, this is the sweet spot.

Full canvas: The advantages of a canvassed jacket are that the interlining moves with your body — often called a floating canvas — and over time the canvas molds to your body's shape, improving the fit. With proper care, a half-canvas suit can last for many years, while a full canvas suit can last even longer — significantly longer than a fused suit, which may only last a few years before showing signs of wear or delamination.

To identify canvas construction before buying, gently pinch the fabric on the chest from outside and inside and pull the layers apart slightly. If you feel a third layer in between, the jacket is canvassed. If you don't feel a third layer and the fabric on the outside feels stiff compared to the fabric on the sleeve, it is very likely fused.

A note on wrinkle resistance: achieve wrinkle resistance through fiber selection and heat-setting rather than heavy formaldehyde resins — a distinction worth asking about if you're buying from a brand that emphasizes "performance" finishes.

Fit: The Shoulder Rules Everything

Prioritize the shoulders first. They're the hardest area to alter, while tailoring can adjust the waist, sleeves, or hem afterward.

Practically speaking, the shoulder seam should sit exactly at the edge of the shoulder, no further. Shoulders are a common source of fitting mistakes for blazers. If the shoulders aren't wide enough, it will pinch slightly — known as shoulder bite. If the shoulders are too wide, it's known as shoulder sag. Both are common fit mistakes, but shoulder sag is the more severe of the two.

For the chest and torso: there should be a little room between your body and the top button when you sit down; the body of the jacket shouldn't cling to you or crease in any weird ways, especially when you move — you shouldn't feel like you'll tear something if you reach for something on a shelf.

Structured versus unstructured is a real decision for the commuter. Unstructured blazers are ideal for warm months and relaxed dress codes: summer business casual, weekend events, and travel. When you need a blazer that doesn't feel stiff, unstructured is the answer — though for formal occasions like board meetings, a structured blazer remains the better choice. Care: Protecting What You've Invested In

Hot water shrinks cotton and wears down synthetic finishes — stick to cooler wash settings. Avoid fabric softeners on technical fabrics, as these can damage waterproofing and reduce breathability in performance wear. If you do only one thing for your blazer, hang it on a proper, wide hanger — the flimsy wire ones from the dry cleaner are a blazer's worst enemy.
