When Jerry Murrell launched Five Guys' 40th anniversary buy-one-get-one promotion on February 17, the plan was straightforward: reward loyal customers with a free burger and mark a milestone with goodwill. What followed was a case study in how anniversary promotions, mismanaged, can turn a celebration into a crisis.
Within hours, stores ran out of food and closed early. The chain's app buckled under the surge. Workers at all 1,500 U.S. locations found themselves buried, apologizing to customers who had shown up expecting a deal. On February 18, Five Guys released a public statement acknowledging that "hardworking crews were placed in a difficult situation." Weeks later, Murrell went further: he wrote approximately 1,500 bonus checks totaling $1.5 million, drawing from what he had set aside to buy his wife Janie a fur coat.
"I was gonna buy my wife a new fur coat, and I spent it on [the bonus] instead," the 82-year-old founder told Fortune in a March 25 phone interview. "She still looks at me like I'm stupid." He was more direct about his motivation: "I didn't want anybody shooting me in the back or anything after the first day, because we really screwed it up."
The Five Guys story is an unlikely but instructive anniversary gifting lesson. Using a restaurant promotion as the backbone of a date night is genuinely smart budget strategy, but the distance between a charming experience and a logistical disaster is thinner than it looks.
Timing is the first variable worth controlling. Anniversary deals tied to a round-number milestone draw maximum traffic on launch day. Arriving at a Five Guys at noon on February 17 was a fundamentally different experience than arriving two days later, when supply chains had recovered and crowds had thinned. Checking a brand's social channels for real-time kitchen or app updates takes about 90 seconds and can salvage a date night entirely.

The backup plan matters as much as the main one. Any outing built around a single promotional offer needs an alternative within walking distance. A gift framed around intention survives a detour far better than one that presented itself as a guaranteed experience. Two restaurants, one reservation, zero expectations set in stone.
Then there is the upgrade, which is where the gift actually lives. A BOGO burger alone is a transaction. What makes it feel like a date is the layering on top: a handwritten note tucked into a jacket pocket, a bar seat instead of a dining room table, a walk somewhere afterward. Murrell understood this instinctively when he reached for his checkbook rather than a crisis communications firm. The gesture was the point, not the logistics.
Five Guys remains a fully private, family-run chain, its name literally drawn from the five sons Murrell and Janie raised together. That context makes the bonus story land differently than it would from a publicly traded company calculating optics. Murrell was apologizing to people he considers his own, and the $1.5 million reflected that. The most lasting anniversary gifts tend to carry exactly that quality: personal accountability, followed by a deliberate act of repair.
