Online jewelry auctions have quietly become a serious market, and Christie's latest 10-day Jewels Online sale in New York made that case with hard numbers: $8,526,145 realized across the sale, selling 131% of its low estimate and drawing bidders from three continents.
White diamonds led the room, so to speak. The top lot was an Important Diamond Ring featuring a 10.02-carat emerald-cut stone signed by Tiffany & Co., which sold for $520,700. Close behind it, a 10.03-carat round brilliant-cut diamond ring achieved $508,000. Together, the two lots alone accounted for more than $1 million of the total take, and an Oscar Heyman & Brothers diamond bracelet added another $139,700 to the diamond column.

Colored stones, however, told the more surprising story. A Sapphire and Diamond Ring from the Estate of Suzanne G. Valenstein realized $317,500, nearly quadrupling its high estimate of $80,000. A Cartier Carved Emerald and Diamond Ring sold for $120,650, more than four times its own high estimate. A Tourmaline and Diamond Ring closed at $88,900 against a low estimate of just $20,000. Provenanced pieces also held their own: a set of spinel, ruby, diamond and gold jewellery from the Collection of Elizabeth Taylor sold for $107,950, and a gold and diamond evening bag realized $63,500.

The geographic spread of buyers underscores how thoroughly Christie's digital platform has globalized fine jewelry collecting. The Americas represented 54% of bidders and buyers, Asia-Pacific accounted for 26%, and EMEA made up the remaining 20%. That kind of international distribution across a 10-day online-only sale signals something more durable than a single strong result: sustained collector appetite for diamonds, colored gemstones, and signed or provenanced pieces is now operating entirely independent of a physical salesroom.
