Nikka turned its 40th-anniversary From the Barrel celebration into a $399.99 gift set that feels less like a bottle release than a built-in tasting class. The anniversary Extra Marriage expression landed at 51.4% ABV in a 500ml bottle with a $69.99 SRP, and only 6,900 bottles were allocated nationwide in the U.S. The original 500ml From the Barrel also returned to the U.S. at $54.99, which makes the three-bottle box feel aimed at people who already have the standard premium shelves covered.

The set includes Extra Marriage, Malt Pieces of the Barrel and Grain Pieces of the Barrel, with the two component bottles both filled at 58% ABV. That is the smart part: Nikka broke the blend apart so the drinker can taste the malt and grain separately before moving back to Extra Marriage and seeing how the pieces come together. For the collector, it has the appeal of a limited-edition object. For the host, it solves the problem of what to pour when you want something with a little theater. For the serious Japanese-whisky fan, it is a guided lesson in one of Nikka’s best-known blends.

From the Barrel first debuted in 1985 in a compact square bottle, built around the idea of whisky being experienced “from barrels.” The blend pulls from more than 100 batches of malt and grain whiskies, drawn predominantly from Yoichi Distillery and Miyagikyo Distillery. Nikka’s blending team originally identified three months of marrying time at 51.4% ABV as the point where the whisky hit its softest mouthfeel and cleanest balance. Extra Marriage extends that to six months in used casks, pushing the profile toward a richer finish without losing the structure that made the original a cult favorite.

That legacy matters. Whisky Advocate named Nikka From the Barrel its No. 1 Whisky of the Year in its Top 20 Whiskies of 2018, and this anniversary release leans into that reputation instead of trying to reinvent it. The original 500ml bottle at $54.99 is the easy grab for someone who wants the classic square-bottle icon back on the shelf. The three-bottle set is the gift for the person who wants the story, the comparisons and the pour sequence all in one box, which is exactly how a prestige whisky becomes a proper present.
