The Macallan revives 1926 lore with rare 40-year-old Romantica release

The Macallan has made a very specific kind of luxury gift here: one for the collector who already knows the difference between rarity and theater. Romantica is a 1986 vintage single-cask whisky from cask no. 9925, laid down on The Macallan Estate in 1986 and bottled in February 2026 after nearly 40 years in sherry-seasoned European oak. It is bottled at 48.6% ABV, shown in natural color, and limited to just 258 bottles, the sort of count that turns a release into a conversation piece before anyone even opens the box.

What gives it real gift appeal is the way The Macallan ties it to its 1926 mythology without pretending to recreate it. The brand says Romantica marks the centenary of The Macallan 1926, the whisky laid down by Janet ‘Nettie’ Harbinson 100 years ago and bottled 60 years later by her great-nephew Allan Shiach. That original release yielded only 40 bottles, and one Valerio Adami bottle sold at Sotheby’s in London in November 2023 for £2,187,500, or $2,714,250, setting a new auction record for any bottle of spirit or wine. For a buyer looking for a once-in-a-lifetime present with built-in status, that history does most of the work.

The smartest part of Romantica is the art. The collection reunites Sir Peter Blake, Valerio Adami and Michael Dillon, the trio whose original work appeared on different 1926 bottlings. Here, The Macallan says each artist created new work around time travel, nature and community, with Peter Blake’s collage titled The Music Room, Valerio Adami’s Romantica (1986), and Michael Dillon’s The Macallan Estate. The release is split into three artist editions, 86 bottles each, and every label is personally signed. That makes it feel less like a single product drop and more like a numbered, commemorative set for someone who collects both whisky and cultural provenance.

There is also a subtle edge to the liquid itself. Robb Report says master distiller Euan Kennedy described the whisky as having a touch of peat smoke, which is unusual for The Macallan and will matter to drinkers who want more than just trophy packaging. The collection launched on May 26, 2026, and direct release from the brand begins July 30, 2026. For the right recipient, this is not a bottle to casually pour. It is the kind of gift that announces taste, memory and access in one move.
