Americans are projected to spend $34.1 billion on Mother's Day this year, and a growing share of that money is moving away from flower arrangements and toward something harder to forget. Luxe Cruises' annual Mother's Day lunch cruise aboard the Cabernet Sauvignon is approaching capacity for its single May 10 sailing on San Francisco Bay, making it one of the more time-sensitive options for Bay Area gift-givers this season.

The three-hour voyage runs 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, departing from 2394 Mariner Square Dr in Alameda, with check-in opening at noon and boarding beginning at 12:30 PM. Free parking is available at the dock. The route covers some of the Bay's most recognizable geography, passing the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, and the San Francisco skyline. A chef-prepared buffet includes hand-carved prime rib, rosemary garlic chicken, seasonal vegetables, and desserts, paired with complimentary champagne and bottomless mimosas. DJ entertainment runs throughout, and families are accommodated with kids' meals available and flexible group seating arrangements.

This is a once-a-year sailing on a single yacht with a fixed guest list. Luxe Cruises operates at least two named event vessels, including the Fume Blanc, which hosts its New Year's Eve Speakeasy cruise, but the Cabernet Sauvignon is the designated Mother's Day ship. There is no second sailing if this one fills.

The scarcity is genuine, and the national data explains why experiential events like this one are under particular pressure right now. Nearly one-third of all consumers plan to give a gift of experience this Mother's Day, according to a survey of 7,948 adults conducted by the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics between March 31 and April 7. Among men specifically, 36% plan to give experiential gifts in 2026, up from 29% in 2019. Phil Rist, Executive Vice President of Strategy at Prosper Insights & Analytics, put it plainly: "Alongside traditional gifts like flowers or a card, gifts of experience are a way to create a special memory with mom."

Nationally, $6.3 billion will be spent on special outings this Mother's Day, outpacing the $3.2 billion projected for flowers and reflecting a structural shift in how the holiday is celebrated post-pandemic. The NRF identifies Mother's Day as second only to the winter holidays in average consumer spending. Katherine Cullen, the NRF's Vice President of Industry and Consumer Insights, noted that "even in the face of economic uncertainty, consumers continue to celebrate the special women in their lives with gifts and outings." The 2026 per-person average is forecast at $259.04, and 48% of celebrants say finding a unique or different gift is their top priority, with 42% focused specifically on creating a lasting memory.

Mother's Day has fallen on the second Sunday in May since 1914, when the holiday was formally established as a national observance. This year that date is May 10, five weeks out, and a fixed-capacity Bay cruise with a single annual sailing is already running short on room.
