Etsy’s personalized gift demand drives strongest quarter in more than a year
Birthdays were Etsy’s biggest and fastest-growing gift segment, helping lift the marketplace to its strongest quarter in more than a year as weddings and AI-led discovery gained ground.

Birthdays are Etsy’s biggest and fastest-growing gift segment, and that surge helped lift the marketplace to its strongest quarter in more than a year. Weddings also picked up as shoppers leaned into customized and heirloom-style pieces that feel made for a specific person.
Etsy, Inc. said on April 29 that first-quarter 2026 results reflected the Etsy marketplace only, after Reverb was sold on June 2, 2025. That makes the year-over-year read less tidy than it looks at first glance, because the company is being measured on a narrower business while it tries to show that personalized shopping still has room to grow.
The buying pattern is clear. Shoppers are not just looking for gifts, they are looking for gifts with a name, a date, a milestone, or a private joke attached. Birthday purchases led the way, and weddings followed with demand for customized and heirloom-style items. For anyone watching what is actually converting online, the signal is hard to miss: personalization has moved from nice-to-have to baseline expectation for high-intent occasions.
That is why Etsy has been leaning harder into AI-powered listing tools, conversational AI, and recommendation systems. Its investor materials have continued to emphasize AI, machine learning, and large language models as strategic priorities, alongside partnerships with OpenAI, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Stripe. The point is practical, not abstract: better discovery should help buyers get from broad intent to the right monogrammed piece, engraved keepsake, or wedding gift faster.

The company’s own materials also show how much is riding on that bet. Etsy says personalized browsing, discovery, and buyer experiences should keep shaping the business through 2026 and beyond, even as it warns that fraud and counterfeit activity are being amplified by advances in AI. That creates a sharp tension inside the same marketplace, where the tools that surface better gifts can also help bad actors mimic them.
The bigger story is not just that Etsy had a strong quarter. It is that birthdays and weddings are now the clearest proof point for where personalized gifting is heading: toward faster search, tighter customization, and gifts that feel specific enough to share before they are even unwrapped.
