Personalized and Handmade Gifts Lead 2026 Mother’s Day Shopping Trends
Mother’s Day spending is set to hit $38 billion, but the real shift is toward gifts that are monogrammed, embroidered, or made by hand.

The fastest-growing Mother’s Day gift this year is the one that looks like someone planned ahead. With the holiday landing Sunday, May 10, shoppers are moving past default flowers and into monogrammed home pieces, embroidered apparel, and Cricut-made keepsakes that feel tailored to one person instead of one checkout aisle.
The scale explains why. The National Retail Federation expects U.S. Mother’s Day spending to hit a record $38 billion, with average planned spending at $284.25 per person. Eighty-four percent of U.S. adults plan to celebrate, and 54% plan to buy for their mother or stepmother. The holiday itself has carried this ritual for more than a century, becoming a national holiday in 1914 after Woodrow Wilson called on Americans to honor mothers on the second Sunday in May.
What looks different now is the gift mix. Etsy says personalized gift was its top-searched term for the second year in a row, and its marketplace now holds more than 100 million items, which is exactly why gifting tools like Gift Mode matter. Business Insider’s gift editors are also flagging the same practical reality: custom and sentimental gifts usually need longer lead times, so waiting until the weekend before Mother’s Day is how good intentions become late deliveries.

If you want the smartest buy, start with the home category. Mark and Graham’s Bespoke Embroidered Crest Pillow Cover starts at $16.50, while its Italian Woven Throw Blanket is $59. These work best for mothers who love a polished couch, a guest room refresh, or anything that makes the house feel a little more finished. A monogrammed pillow is personal without being precious, which is exactly why it lands.
For the mom who actually wears gifts, embroidered apparel is the better move. Etsy listings for custom embroidered sweatshirts are running from about $21.84 to $30.95, including a custom embroidered mama sweatshirt at $30.95. That is the right lane for new mothers, grandmothers, and women who live in crewnecks more than in dresses. It feels custom because it is, but it still gets worn on school runs and Sunday errands.

If your budget is tighter or the gift needs to come from kids, Cricut-made keepsakes are the cheapest way to look thoughtful fast. Cricut Everyday Iron-On starts at $6.49, and a raw wood ornament runs $11.99. That pairing works for a hand-decorated tote, a sweatshirt with names, or a small keepsake that can carry a child’s handwriting, a date, or a family inside joke. It is less about the object than the fact that nobody else will have the same one.
Mother’s Day has always rewarded the gift that feels specific, but 2026 is making that expectation impossible to ignore. In a year when families are planning to spend more than ever, the safest bet is still the most personal one.
