Oakwell Beer Spa in Denver has built its Mother's Day pitch around a simple premise: flowers wilt by Wednesday, but a 90-minute private suite with craft beer, infrared saunas, and a robotics-enabled massage chair is harder to forget.

The signature experience begins in the taproom, where guests pour from a rotating selection of local beer, wine, and cider before moving into a private suite. There, a warm bath infused with hops, malted barley, and custom-blended botanicals serves as the centerpiece. The water is not fermented beer; an in-house herbalist crafts the blends specifically for skin absorption. Hops contain polyphenols claimed to reduce inflammation and combat skin aging, while barley delivers epidermal growth factors and beta-glucan, a compound that helps skin attract and retain moisture. B vitamins in barley may also help prevent water loss. After the soak, guests move to an infrared sauna and then a full-body robotic massage chair before returning to the taproom.

The practice of soaking in beer-infused water is not new. Beer spas trace back more than 1,000 years in Central Europe; one of the earliest documented instances dates to 921 AD, when King Wenceslas of Bohemia reportedly bathed in beer.

The timing of Oakwell's Mother's Day push aligns with a measurable shift in consumer behavior. In 2025, Americans planned to spend $34.1 billion on Mother's Day gifts and experiences, with the average shopper allocating $259.04. U.S. consumers planned to spend nearly $3.5 billion on gift cards alone for the holiday. While spending on traditional categories held roughly flat, spending on special outings was up year-over-year. A YouGov survey found that 25% of respondents wanted a wellness or spa experience as a Mother's Day gift, up from 18% the prior year. Separately, 61% of American mothers said their preference for the holiday was simply spending time with their children, a dynamic that suits Oakwell's private suites, which are designed for pairs.

Oakwell was founded by Jessica and Damien Zouaoui, a husband-and-wife team who met in New York City. The concept grew out of a 14-month, 25-country trip the couple took together, during which they encountered beer spa culture in Central Europe. They originally launched the business as The Beer Spa before rebranding to Oakwell Beer Spa. The Denver flagship opened in 2021 in a 4,000-square-foot facility anchored by a self-pour taproom. A second location opened in Highlands Ranch, Colorado in April 2025, designed as the prototype for a national franchise rollout; Oakwell officially launched its franchising program on January 20, 2026.

The brand's accolades include a spot on TIME magazine's list of the World's Greatest Places, recognition by USA Today's 10 Best as one of the nation's top spas, and a designation by Entrepreneur magazine as one of the Best Mom & Pop Shops in America.

For buyers outside Colorado, the Oakwell Cosmetics retail line offers beer-infused bath and body products that carry a version of the concept into any home bathroom. For those planning to visit either Colorado location, Oakwell has flagged heavy demand and recommends securing bookings and gift cards well ahead of Mother's Day, with spending on spa experiences continuing to climb.
