Lidl Recalls Favorina Chocolate Ladybugs Over Undeclared Hazelnut Allergen
Lidl US recalled all lots of Favorina Chocolate Ladybugs after packaging failed to list hazelnuts, putting allergy sufferers at risk across 10 states.

Lidl US recalled all lots of its Favorina Chocolate Ladybugs, German-Style Nougat, sold in 3.52 oz boxes with UPC 20304492, due to an undeclared hazelnut allergen. The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the product containing tree nuts was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of hazelnuts. Consumers with hazelnut allergies risk serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if the product is consumed.
Sold in 3.52-ounce packages with the UPC 20304492, the product was distributed to all Lidl stores in Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia from Jan. 28 through March 11. The FDA posted the company's announcement as a public service on March 12, 2026. No expiration date or any other code appears on the product label, and the recall covers all lots without exception.
Lidl US said in a statement: "The health and safety of our customers is our top priority. Lidl US regrets any inconvenience related to this voluntary recall. Our Quality Assurance Department is constantly working to ensure that all products on our shelves meet the high-quality standards that we would expect when feeding our own families."
No illnesses have been reported to date. The recall notice did not list specific store locations within each state. The product was distributed to all Lidl stores in the affected jurisdictions, and as Lohud reported, at least two Lidl supermarkets operate in Westchester County, New York, among the locations covered by the notice.
The candy pieces are wrapped in gold foil with a ladybug icon on them, visible through the plastic packaging — a seasonal confection that was part of Lidl's Favorina line, described in product imagery as Fairtrade certified German-style nougat.
Customers who possess the affected products are advised not to consume them. Products may be returned to any Lidl store for a full refund, and no receipt is necessary. Customers who have questions about the recall can call the store's Customer Care Hotline at (844) 747-5435 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Saturday.
Hazelnuts are among the tree nuts classified as major food allergens under federal law, meaning manufacturers are required to declare their presence clearly on product packaging. The failure to do so here — across a distribution window spanning nearly six weeks and ten jurisdictions — is the labeling lapse that triggered the voluntary action. Lidl is a German discount grocery chain that opened its first U.S. stores in 2017 in Virginia and has since expanded across the East Coast, making the geographic reach of this recall a direct reflection of where the chain has established its customer base.
