GAMMA Sports Parent Company Files Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in Pittsburgh Court
GAMMA Sports posted $14.23M in 2024 sales yet still lost $3.26M, pushing the Pittsburgh paddle brand into Chapter 11 bankruptcy on March 17.

Ferrari Importing, Inc., the Pittsburgh company behind the GAMMA Sports brand, filed a voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition on March 17, 2026, in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, seeking protection from between 50 and 99 creditors while reporting assets and liabilities each estimated between $1 million and $10 million.
The filing, assigned case number 2:26-bk-20738 before Judge Gregory L. Taddonio, proceeds under Subchapter V of Chapter 11, which is reserved for small business debtors as defined under 11 U.S.C. § 101(51D). The company's aggregate noncontingent liquidated debts were reported as less than $3,424,000, the threshold that qualifies a debtor for the streamlined Subchapter V process. Matthew Ferrari, the company's president, signed the petition as authorized representative, and Jason L. Ott of Frost Brown Todd LLC is listed as counsel of record on the official docket.
Tax documents filed as part of the petition tell the story plainly: GAMMA Sports generated approximately $14.23 million in gross sales during 2024 but still posted a loss of roughly $3.26 million for the year. The family-owned manufacturer, headquartered at 200 Waterfront Drive in Pittsburgh, sells tennis and pickleball gear through wholesale and online channels.
The bankruptcy lands against a backdrop of surging pickleball participation that has paradoxically not translated into financial stability for every equipment supplier. The 2025 Sports and Fitness Industry Association Participation Report confirmed that "for the fourth consecutive year, pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the U.S.," with 19.8 million Americans participating in 2024, a 45.8% increase over 2023 and a 311% increase from three years prior. A separate USChamber.com dataset estimated that 48.3 million Americans played pickleball at least once in the last 12 months, representing a 35% increase in just six months. The distinction matters: one measures committed annual participants, the other measures any exposure to the sport.
Despite that market tailwind, broader retail pressures on sporting goods suppliers have been severe. David Swartz, a senior equity analyst at Morningstar Research Services, framed the challenge bluntly when speaking to The Washington Post: "Mall stores have lost shoppers to stand-alone and online operations in the past two decades, a trend mirrored in the athletic-goods space." That dynamic has eroded wholesale partner sales even for brands operating outside traditional retail.
The court's docket moved quickly after the initial filing. By March 19, the court had scheduled a Meeting of Creditors under Section 341 to be conducted by telephone, and an Order with Notice was entered the same afternoon. The following day, Duquesne Light Company, the Pittsburgh-area electric utility, filed a Notice of Appearance and Request for Notice through attorney Brent J. Lemon, signaling it intends to monitor the proceedings as a creditor.

Key deadlines now govern the case. Financial disclosures including the balance sheet, cash flow statement, statement of operations, and tax information were due March 24, 2026. The company's small business reorganization plan and accompanying disclosure statement must be filed by September 14, 2026, the same date by which government proofs of claim are due.
For pickleball players who have relied on GAMMA paddles and equipment, the Chapter 11 filing does not necessarily mean the brand disappears. Subchapter V is specifically designed to give small businesses a faster, less costly path to reorganization rather than liquidation, and the court's acceptance of the petition keeps operations alive while a restructuring plan is negotiated. Whether GAMMA Sports emerges intact will depend on what those September filings reveal.
