BSC Alphians Viert 50 Jaar met Feestelijk Opening Weekend in Alphen
Fifty years on, club founder Ben Ponsioen joined alderman Gert-Jan Schotanus on the mound to open BSC Alphians' golden anniversary season in Alphen aan den Rijn.

Fifty years after BSC Alphians first put a team on the diamond, club founder Ben Ponsioen returned to the field last weekend alongside Alphen aan den Rijn alderman Gert-Jan Schotanus to throw out a ceremonial first pitch, officially opening the club's golden anniversary season at its home ground in Alphen.
The Opening Weekend brought multiple age groups into action across two days. Saturday featured competition for the U21-1, U15-1, and U15-2 sides, with the U12-1 hosting a home fixture at 12:30. Sunday's programme built toward the main event: Heren 1 at 14:00, preceded at 13:45 by the jubilee ceremony in which Ponsioen and Schotanus jointly performed the honorary throw. It was a moment that connected the club's founding generation to its current municipal standing in one gesture.
Before the Heren 1 game, players and coaches gathered for a free team photo shoot. Members were asked to arrive in uniform, with all photographs made available for free download after the session.
The weekend also served as an open invitation to anyone considering picking up a glove for the first time. The Alphians emphasised that the club caters to every age and level, from BeeBall programmes for the youngest participants through to senior competition, with trial training sessions on offer throughout. The club presented baseball and softball as sports built around teamwork, coordination, and perseverance.
The presence of Alderman Schotanus at the opening ceremony carried weight beyond the ceremonial. For a community-level club, visibility with local government translates directly into the practical support that keeps a diamond running: field upgrades, training time, and municipal subsidies. That a founding member and a sitting alderman shared the mound together, fifty seasons in, says something about the roots the Alphians have put down in Alphen aan den Rijn.
