De Hypotheker Olympia Haarlem opened its title defense with exactly the kind of doubleheader that keeps rivals alert: a tense 8-7 win over Neptunus in eight innings, followed by a 7-0 shutout that ended by the run-ahead rule after five innings.

The reigning Dutch champions started the 2026 Softball Hoofdklasse regular season on 11 April with both home games against Neptunus, and they left opening day with a clean sweep. Five of the six scheduled games across the league were completed, while the sixth was stopped early because of weather, a reminder that the first weekend of the season can still be shaped as much by the sky as by the scorebook.

For Olympia Haarlem, the early result fits a club that has already built a serious championship rhythm. The Haarlem side won the Dutch softball crown in 2024 and again in 2025, and the 2026 campaign began with the same sponsor name listed in the KNBSB stats system, alongside Neptunus, Onze Gezellen, ROEF!, Sparks Haarlem and Tex Town Tigers in the Hoofdklasse field.

That matters because the first day did not hand Olympia one easy path to victory. The opener went to eight innings before the champions edged Neptunus by a single run, then they turned around and controlled the second game from start to finish, closing it out under the run-ahead rule. Taken together, those two results suggest a team that can survive a grind and then separate quickly once it gets control.

That is the first real checkpoint in a title defense: not just whether the champions can win, but whether they can still win in different ways. Olympia Haarlem showed both ends of that formula against Neptunus, which is why the opening sweep already reads like a warning shot in a league that has only just begun its spring and summer schedule.

Olympia Haarlem is based in Haarlem, Noord-Holland, and the club’s current structure dates to 2006, when DCO, DSC ’74 and TYBB merged. The baseball and softball departments of DSC ’74 and TYBB joined the merged club in 2007, adding to a program that has now turned back-to-back titles into a bid for a three-peat. If the opening weekend is any guide, the path is there again, but the close game in the first leg showed that rivals will still have chances to make this race interesting.
