Nieuwegein Diamonds opent deuren met mix-toernooi en open dag in Galecop
Nieuwegein Diamonds turned its free open day and mix-toernooi into a one-stop first step for baseball and softball, with no experience needed and a barbecue to finish.

Nieuwegein Diamonds made Sportpark Galecop feel like an open door on Saturday, April 11, 2026, pairing a mix-toernooi with an open day designed to bring new faces into honkbal and softbal without any barrier to entry. The club kept the pitch simple: come watch, come try, or come for a sporty day out, with free admission and no prior experience required.
That approach fits a club that has spent years building itself around accessibility. Nieuwegein Diamonds dates back to 1982, when it was founded under the name Geinoord. The club became independent in 2003 and moved into its own field and clubhouse at Sportpark Galecop in 2005. Today it says it has about 100 members and describes itself as a place where players of every age can enjoy baseball and softball together.
The open day was more than a one-off showcase. The club used it as a practical introduction to what comes next: membership, trial training, volunteering and sponsorship were all presented as clear next steps for anyone who liked what they saw. That makes the day useful for families, former players and complete beginners alike, especially because the Diamonds also run age-group training across BeeBall for ages 0 to 9, U12 pupillen, U15 aspiranten and U21 junioren, alongside senior and combined teams.

The timing mattered too. A club that keeps members active in winter with alternatives such as Ultimate Frisbee is clearly thinking beyond one sunny Saturday. That broader rhythm helps explain why the Diamonds frame themselves not just as a baseball club, but as a year-round sports community. For a newcomer, that means the first visit is not a sales pitch so much as a real look at how the club works from youth levels to senior sides.
The day at Galecop also showed how Nieuwegein Diamonds tries to make the social side of the sport part of the package. The barbecue that followed cost €12.50 per person, a small detail that underlined the club’s family feel and gave visitors an easy way to stay after the last game. In a country with nearly 200 baseball clubs, the Diamonds are betting that a friendly first contact, one free day, and a chance to join in is often enough to turn curiosity into a first training session.
