The Iowa Bonsai Association is heading into its busiest stretch of the year with packed meetings, a full calendar and a clear sign that the local bonsai scene is drawing more people into the fold. Its May newsletter, posted May 7, said the club has had an incredible start to the season, with familiar faces and plenty of new ones showing up, participating and adding to the sense of community.

That momentum matters because the association has built its program around regular, practical access. Founded in 1979 to promote appreciation and development of bonsai, the club meets on the third Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, 909 Robert D. Ray Drive in Des Moines. The garden says the meetings are open to the public and included with general admission, a setup that keeps the door open for anyone curious about wiring, pruning, repotting or simply watching how club members work through the details of a tree.

The calendar shows how active the year is becoming. A May 16 open discussion meeting is next at the botanical garden, followed by a June session on fertilizer. July roundtables will cover ficus, elms and black pines, then August turns to tools, including where to buy them, basic tool choices and tool care. September will focus on preparing for the fall show, October on winter care and November on the annual auction of donations. For a hobby that rewards timing and repetition, that kind of sequence gives members a steady path from spring growth into winter protection.

The association also sits squarely inside the larger bonsai network. Its website says it is a member in good standing with the Mid-America Bonsai Alliance, the American Bonsai Society, Bonsai Clubs International and the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden. Member benefits include monthly meetings, workshops, bonsai shows, collecting trips, educational demonstrations, a newsletter and discounts at local merchants and web vendors, reinforcing the club’s role as both a social hub and a working education center.

Spring is especially important. The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden lists the Iowa Bonsai Association’s annual Spring Show & Sale for April 18-19, 2026, and the club says its spring exhibition has historically been tied to the garden’s Earth Day celebration. In 2024, more than 1,800 visitors viewed the spring exhibition on Saturday alone, a number that shows how much public interest the event can generate when the trees are at their best. With the show season underway and the meeting room full, May has become a high-energy month for Iowa bonsai growers, and the club’s schedule suggests that pace will carry straight through the rest of the year.
