Mid-Michigan Bonsai Club Plans Two-Part Repotting Meeting for March
MMBC compares repotting to open-heart surgery as it plans a two-night March program with demos on the 19th and hands-on tree work at Van Attas on the 21st.

The Mid-Michigan Bonsai Club has scheduled a two-part repotting program this month, splitting the subject across a Thursday evening presentation and a Saturday hands-on session two days later, with the club urging members to act before forecasted freezing temperatures close the repotting window.
Part One lands on March 19 at the Foster Community Center, Room 109, at 200 North Foster Avenue in Lansing. Gathering begins at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting runs through 9:00 p.m. The session carries the title "Bonsai Repotting: What you need to know beforehand" and will include live demonstrations. The club's announcement frames the subject with characteristic directness: "Repotting bonsai is often a topic of great debate. It has been equated to performing open heart surgery in humans." The comparison holds up when you consider what repotting actually demands: root pruning, a full soil change, securing the nebari and trunk to a new container, and what the club describes as "a myriad of other considerations and techniques." The evening will work through many of those repotting topics, issues, and techniques, though the specific list of questions flagged in the announcement was not published with the event notice.
Members who come prepared will get the most out of the evening. The club's instruction is plain: "gather up your tools, soil, wire, containers and join other MMBC members for bonsai repotting."
Part Two follows on Saturday, March 21, when MMBC moves to Van Attas for hands-on, educational open sessions running from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The format is straightforward: members bring their trees and receive repotting assistance on-site. Van Attas stocks some bonsai soil, containers, and other resources, but the club advises bringing personal supplies. The club is candid about why Van Attas works for this kind of session: "MMBC utilizes Van Attas for workshops, because we can make a mess and we are not pressed for time as we are at the Foster Community Center." The announcement closes with a pointed acknowledgment of the venue's contribution: "Be sure to thank Van Attas for their continued support of MMBC!"
The timing carries urgency beyond the calendar. The club's announcement notes that freezing temperatures are in the forecast and issues a clear caution: "Trees that are to be repotted should not be allowed to freeze once they are repotted. You will need to identify a location where the trees can recover without fighting extreme cold." Anyone planning to repot at either session should have that recovery space sorted before they walk through the door.
MMBC meets regularly on the third Thursday of each month at the Foster Community Center, and its meetings are open to the public, welcoming practitioners at every level of experience. Reach the club at midmichbonsaiclub@gmail.com or through its website at midmichiganbonsai.com.
