Black Ops 7 Season 2 Adds SG-12 Shotgun, Sparks Close-Range Meta Debate
Treyarch added the returning SG-12 semi-automatic shotgun in Black Ops 7 Season 2 (mid-February 2026), unlocked via the Escalation Directive event and fueling a revived fire-shotgun debate.

Treyarch's Season 2 drop in mid-February 2026 introduced the SG-12, a semi-automatic shotgun that has appeared in earlier Call of Duty titles, and the addition immediately altered close-range play. The update ties the SG-12 to the Escalation Directive event, where players can unlock the weapon, and the new Fire Mods option includes 12 Gauge Dragon’s Breath rounds that change how encounters play out on multiplayer maps.
Dexerto’s coverage highlights the SG-12’s Dragon’s Breath option and its effect on engagements. “As part of the new Escalation Directive event, players can unlock the SG-12 Shotgun, which offers the option for 12 Gauge Dragon’s Breath rounds under the Fire Mods category. This transforms the already strong weapon into an absolute monster at close range.” Those flaming rounds, Dexerto writes, “do a ton of burn damage, not to mention the way they cover the map in flames.”

Playtest impressions in Dexerto’s piece provide concrete in-match claims that players should watch for. “With the help of the flaming rounds, you can literally melt through enemies by lighting them on fire and dealing burn damage over time, especially if you throw on extended mags to allow you spam lots of shots in quick succession. In the matches we played, it took only two or three shots to take down a player on full health, which is light work if you have a fast trigger finger.” Dexerto also uses the framing “Fire Shotgun meta is back in Black Ops 7,” noting historical parallels in Warzone and Vanguard.
Community reaction has been immediate and polarized. A social post circulating on Twitter declares: “‼️🚨 NEW #1 META FIRE SHOTGUN 🚨‼️
🆕 The New SG-12 is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING in #BlackOps7 MP! 🔥
💥 Excellent Damage 💥 Excellent Range 💥 Great Fire Rate with Prestige Attachment
Much better than the Akita & i highly recommend using it! 👌

Many players and commentators des”, the source truncates there.
What is not yet public are official Treyarch numbers and a formal balancing statement. The available material contains no patch notes with per-pellet damage, RPM, pellet count, range falloff, or exact unlock conditions beyond the Escalation Directive wording. If Dexerto’s two-to-three-shot playtest results scale across the player base, expect pick rates and close-quarters time-to-kill metrics to spike and for Treyarch to face pressure for a follow-up patch.
For now, the SG-12’s Dragon’s Breath rounds, extended mags recommendations, and reported Prestige Attachment fire-rate synergy are the concrete changes shaping Season 2. Watch for official patch notes and server-side pick-rate stats to validate whether the revived fire-shotgun meta becomes a long-term shift or a short-lived Season 2 flashpoint.
