Balance Catamarans unveils VersaDrive diesel-electric option across new models
Balance Catamarans is rolling out the VersaDrive diesel-electric option across new models, promising up to 25% fuel savings on the 464 cc and 15 kW per engine charging capacity.

Balance Catamarans has moved hybrid propulsion from afterthought to design criterion by offering a diesel-electric VersaDrive option across its new and updated models, with the 464 cc launching in February 2026 and the 502 CC engineered around the system. The company says the 464 cc in VersaDrive configuration can cut fossil-fuel consumption by as much as 25% while its battery bank and charging architecture support faster recharging and quieter motoring.
The VersaDrive package is built around Integrel Solutions’ E-Drive fitted to Yanmar engines, enabling saildrive fitment and relocating engines away from living spaces - a configuration Philip Berman calls a perfect fit after “deep discussions with Integrel.” Balance and its marketing copy state the 464 cc carries a large 36 kW, 48 volt lithium battery bank that can be charged at up to 15 kW per engine, with the twin-engine arrangement providing up to 30 kW total charging output. Sources also describe the system delivering about 40 hp of electric propulsion from the battery bank for quiet manoeuvring and windless motoring.
Balance’s rollout is model specific. The Balance 464 cc is the headline new model, promoted with a heavily carbon fiber reinforced foam core hull, carbon fiber substructure and a powerful sail plan variously cited at 119 m2 / 1,280 ft2 and described elsewhere as 1,330 sq ft. Balance’s performance claims include upwind speeds in the 7.5 to 8.5 knot range, reaching speeds up to 17 knots and the ability to “surge into the 20s” when surfing down a swell. The Balance site proclaims the 464 cc VersaDrive as a “peerless, state-of-the-art eco adventure catamaran.”
The Balance 502 CC has been redesigned rather than enlarged and was intentionally conceived around the VersaDrive option. Designer notes and Seahorse reporting underline rig and hull changes: “We’ve supercharged the 502’s rig. Not only are the hulls longer and leaner, we’ve lowered the pelican striker, raised the bowsprit and have been able to push the forestay forward 18 inches,” Berman said. Katamarans describes the 502 as a long-range ocean voyager and positions the model as replacing the successful 482.
On the larger end, the Balance 580 is offered with standard twin Yanmar 57 hp engines or the optional VersaDrive plus Integrel E-drives. Cruising World’s spec table lists the 58 ft 3 in LOA, 28 ft 3 in beam, 264 gal fuel capacity and a displacement of 36,753 lbs cruise-ready. In hybrid form the 580’s high-output alternators are said to generate up to 15 kW per engine, and paired with optional 3.4 kW of solar the package can reduce or eliminate the need for a standalone generator while supporting hotel loads.
Balance frames VersaDrive as an option, not a compromise, to preserve its “liveable performance” DNA while offering faster charging, quieter electric motoring and reduced generator dependence. The company’s pivot followed dissatisfaction with earlier market hybrids and a targeted partnership with Integrel that allowed OEM integration from day one. Designers on the projects include Philip Berman and Anton du Toit, with Du Toit Yacht Design also involved in the program.
Owners and captains operating long-range passages, charter fleets and refit yards will watch whether the 15 kW per engine charging math, 36 kW battery bank on the 464 cc and the ~40 hp electric drive translate into real-world fuel savings and lower generator hours. Balance has launched the 464 cc in February 2026 and has positioned the 502, 540 and 580 to offer the VersaDrive option as the range evolves.
