A former Wienerschnitzel stand on Pico Boulevard is now pulling shots. Intelligentsia Coffee opened its first drive-through coffeebar in early March 2026 at 3010 Pico Blvd in Santa Monica, converting the site's distinctive A-frame structure into a mixed-format operation that includes a drive-through lane, a walk-up counter, and a renovated patio.

The opening marks the company's first new retail location in more than five years, and its first since reintroducing a more conventional drinks program at its Pasadena Illumination Bar, which had initially prepared espresso drinks using a freeze-dried, instant version of its Black Cat espresso blend. That willingness to experiment with format and programming has become something of a pattern for Intelligentsia in recent years, and the Santa Monica location leans into that same tension: specialty coffee, built for a drive-through lane.

For a brand whose identity has long been tied to the deliberate rhythm of the coffeebar, the move into drive-through service is notable. But according to Haughey, the format is designed as an addition to the Intelligentsia experience rather than a departure from it. "The location is intentionally more than just a unique drive-through. While designed for the on-the-go commuter, the walk-up counter and the thoughtfully renovated patio space are there to provide that classic, relaxed coffeebar experience for the neighborhood," Haughey said. "It allows us to meet every guest where they are."

The A-frame building itself is part of the story. The angular structure, which once housed a Wienerschnitzel, gives the site an architectural character uncommon in specialty coffee retail. The renovated patio signals that Intelligentsia isn't simply dropping a drive-through menu into a repurposed fast-food shell; the site is meant to function as a genuine neighborhood coffeebar, one that happens to have a lane for commuters who can't or won't stop.

Whether the Santa Monica format points toward future Intelligentsia expansion or stays a one-off experiment remains to be seen. What's clear is that this is the company's most significant retail move in years, arriving at a moment when the wider specialty coffee world is still working out how much convenience it can absorb before something essential gets lost in the process.
