Lighthouse Mission Opens Liminal Coffee in Bellingham as Workforce-Development Program
Lighthouse Mission is opening Liminal Coffee in Bellingham to train and hire program participants and funnel proceeds to its homelessness services.

A nonprofit coffee shop inside Lighthouse Mission’s Holly Street facility will open its doors to the public on Feb. 14, offering barista training, paid shifts, and a community-facing café that channels proceeds back into local homelessness services. Liminal Coffee will operate from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday at 916 W. Holly St., on the first/bottom floor with a public entrance separate from Lighthouse Mission staff and guest entries.
Liminal is explicitly framed as a workforce-development site. Lighthouse Mission’s Feb. 4 news release and the new shop’s website describe a barista training program that provides job training, mentorship, and practical skills to people who have completed the organization’s recovery program. Liminal’s site says, “Through our barista training program, we walk alongside individuals who have completed Lighthouse Mission Ministries’ recovery program, offering job training, mentorship, and practical skills that prepare them for independence and meaningful work.” The mission says graduates will serve alongside experienced staff as part of a broader effort to move people toward independence.
Justin Reeves, Lighthouse Mission chief operating officer, emphasized a staged staffing approach, noting in the Feb. 4 news release, “While not all positions will initially be filled by guests, the long-term goal is to increasingly staff the shop with individuals who have developed skills and readiness through Lighthouse Mission programs.” That mixed-model language contrasts with some outside coverage that described the shop as run entirely by residents who completed recovery programs; Lighthouse Mission’s own statements make clear the plan at launch is a blend of experienced team members and current or former guests.
Menu and vendor partners reflect a local-first approach. Liminal will serve specialty coffee roasted with Makeworth beans and use Monin syrups, while pastries will come from Lamination Station and breakfast burritos and sandwiches from Café Rumba. The shop is described as “a modern, cozy coffee shop” intended to be welcoming to the entire community while continuing a decade-long tradition of serving coffee to unhoused guests. Lighthouse Mission states that 100 percent of proceeds will benefit its programming.

The public grand opening is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14, and will include a drawing for three gift baskets. The shop is promoting a rewards sign-up incentive that offers a free drink for new members.
For readers, Liminal offers a chance to support local workforce development with everyday purchases, meet graduates of Lighthouse Mission’s recovery programs, and try a new downtown coffee spot. Expect initial hours and staffing to evolve as training ramps up, and watch for announcements about expanded schedules, additional hires from program cohorts, and further detail on the barista curriculum.
