Necessity Coffee Opens in San Marcos' North City, Emphasizing Community, Rotating Espresso
Necessity Coffee opened a North City location at 250 North City Drive in San Marcos with a March 7 grand opening, a live DJ, and giveaways for the first 50 guests.

Necessity Coffee opened its newest café at 250 North City Drive in the North City district of San Marcos with a grand opening celebration on Saturday, March 7, 2026, running from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event featured a live DJ and special giveaways for early arrivals, with the first 50 guests in line receiving a complimentary item courtesy of North City.
Founded by Jon Runion, Necessity Coffee emphasizes a rotating drink program alongside everyday staples: drip coffee, pour over, vanilla lattes, flat whites, matcha, and chai. The shop also lists seasonal specialty drinks, loose leaf tea, and assorted pastries on its menu, and the North City location will be open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Sources covering the opening agree the first 50 guests received a free beverage provided “courtesy of North City,” while one account adds that the giveaway included a t-shirt in addition to a free coffee. That discrepancy has not been clarified publicly; organizers attributed the giveaways to North City partnership efforts tied to the celebration.
The new café sits inside North City, a planned mixed-use neighborhood developed by Sea Breeze Properties, which has been positioning the district as a gathering spot for homes, dining, offices, entertainment, and public art. Sea Breeze Properties Principal Darren Levitt commented on the opening, saying, "We cannot wait to see our community come together over a great cup of coffee," and added, "Jon and his team are creating incredible coffee experiences as they expand throughout San Diego. They represent the homegrown, artisanal culinary experiences we are working to curate throughout North City. We look forward to celebrating their opening with coffee lovers from across the region."
North City’s retail and culinary mix now includes restaurants and shops located near Necessity Coffee, and the district’s residential components include 222 North City luxury apartments, Block C apartment homes, and The Hill District from Shea Homes and Lennar. Neighborhood amenities cited alongside the retail mix include Union CoWork and Mesa Rim, situating the café within a larger placemaking effort designed to drive daily foot traffic.

The March 7 opening marks Necessity Coffee’s formal entry into North City and positions the shop as a morning-and-lunch neighborhood stop with a rotating espresso program and community-focused programming.
