PunThai Coffee narrows gap on Café Amazon with rapid expansion

PunThai Coffee has become one of Thailand’s sharpest challengers to Café Amazon, opening more than 800 net new outlets last year and reaching 2,151 locations as the race for on-the-go coffee accelerated.

That growth beat PunThai’s target of 2,000 stores and came out to roughly two new locations a day. For PTG Energy, which owns the chain, the pace matters because PunThai is no longer just filling a niche on the edge of the market. It is scaling fast enough to pressure a long-time leader.

The expansion is happening in a market that still has room to grow. Thailand’s branded coffee market is forecast to expand 6% over the next five years, giving PunThai room to keep adding stores while the category itself widens. In a country where coffee is often bought between errands, on the way to work or during fuel stops, store density can matter as much as the cup. The brands that win are the ones that meet customers where they already are.

That is where PunThai’s model has started to look effective. Its connection to PTG Energy gives it a built-in retail backdrop, and that kind of adjacency is valuable in a market shaped by petrol stations, convenience-linked sites and transit corridors. The formula rewards speed, familiarity and value, not just menu innovation. A chain that can open quickly and keep prices competitive can lock in repeat traffic before a rival can.

Café Amazon still leads the pack, but PunThai’s run shows how quickly a dense store network can close a gap in branded coffee. The fight in Thailand is not being decided by café theater or specialty positioning alone. It is being decided by access, convenience and the ability to turn everyday movement into a coffee habit, and PunThai has moved itself squarely into that contest.
