Stumptown Coffee to close longtime Sunnyside Southeast Belmont cafe after 25 years
Stumptown Coffee will close its Sunnyside Southeast Belmont cafe after 25 years, citing the high cost of refurbishing the space; last day of service is Feb. 28, 2026.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters announced it will close its Southeast Belmont café at 3356 S.E. Belmont St., the Sunnyside neighborhood spot that opened in 2001, with the last day of service set for Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026. The company made the announcement on social media on Tuesday and framed the decision as driven by the expense of bringing the location up to current needs.
In an Instagram post shared by the company, Stumptown said, "Our decision to close this location is due to the high cost of refurbishing the space to meet today's needs." The post also thanked the community: "We're deeply grateful for the years spent at 34th and S.E. Belmont and for everyone who made it what it was: the regulars, the neighbors, and the team members who poured heart into every day here." The company added, "This cafe has meant so much to us and to the Portland community, so sharing this news is incredibly difficult."
The Belmont shop is the second-oldest Stumptown location still operating; the original flagship opened on Southeast Division Street at 4525 S.E. Division St. in 1999. For a quarter century the Belmont storefront in an old brick building at the 34th and Belmont intersection anchored morning routines, lunchtime stopovers and neighborhood meetups. Reporters noted the cafe would "pour its last oat milk macchiatto" before closing, a small signal of how ingrained the shop has been in local coffee culture.
Stumptown said it intends to remain in Portland and is "actively looking for our next cafe home," adding that the company plans to replace the cafe with another Portland location. The chain now operates multiple outlets across the city, including downtown locations and a Portland International Airport shop, plus a Southwest Washington Street location that opened in April 2024. Some outlets report Stumptown currently has five cafes across Portland. Beyond the city, Stumptown has expanded to markets including New York, Los Angeles and Kyoto, Japan.

The company’s corporate history has shifted since its founding by Duane Sorenson in 1999. Stumptown took a major investment from TSG Consumer Partners in 2011 and was bought by Peet’s Coffee parent JAB Holding Company in 2015. Sorenson now runs Puff Coffee, a micro roastery and cafe on S.E. Stark Street.
Practical details for readers: the Belmont café will serve customers through Feb. 28 at 3356 S.E. Belmont St.; no specific time was given for the final service. The announcement did not include financial figures for the needed updates, nor did it address staff plans or the building owner’s intentions for the space after the lease ends.
For Sunnyside regulars and Portland coffee fans, the closing marks the end of a 25-year chapter and a reminder of the rising costs of maintaining older neighborhood storefronts. Stumptown’s promise to look for a new cafe home means the brand plans to remain part of Portland’s coffee scene, and neighborhood drinkers will be watching where the next chapter opens.
