CrossFit converts Level 4 coach credential to fully virtual individualized program
CrossFit has moved the Certified CrossFit Level 4 Coach (CF-L4) to a fully virtual, individualized development and evaluation process with limited, waitlisted registration.

CrossFit converted its Certified CrossFit Level 4 Coach (CF-L4) process into a fully virtual, individualized development and evaluation program, replacing the previous in-person evaluation and putting registration on a waitlist because capacity is limited. The organization labels the change "NEW AS OF FEBRUARY 2026" and says the program includes personalized feedback and a final virtual evaluation.
CrossFit’s announcement states plainly: “This new virtual format replaces the previous in-person evaluation with an individualized coach development component that includes personalized feedback and a final virtual evaluation. Plan to dedicate two to three hours per week over four to six weeks to complete the process.” That timeline sets an expected candidate commitment of roughly 8 to 18 hours total across the cohort window.
The Level 4 process is structured in two phases: Phase 1 – Assessment Phase, and Phase 2 – Evaluation Phase. The site copy specifies Phase 2 requirements: candidates “are required to submit a pre-evaluation form and final coaching video. The Level 4 Evaluation Team will review and evaluate the candidate’s proficiency in six primary domains:” The announcement also makes clear that “Candidates who meet the established passing requirements of the evaluation and successfully complete the assessment process will earn the CF-L4 trainer credential.”
CrossFit frames the CF-L4 as its highest credential. The official overview reads: “The Certified CrossFit Level 4 Coach (CF-L4) is the highest credential offered by CrossFit. It is for experienced trainers who have been coaching CrossFit in a group setting for several years. The credential is earned by trainers who have significant coaching experience, a comprehensive educational background, and CrossFit’s prerequisite certification, the Certified CrossFit Level 3 Trainer credential.” That positions the virtual CF-L4 firmly as an advanced, post-Level 3 pathway for seasoned group coaches.
Capacity and access are immediate hurdles for prospective candidates. The Level 4 registration notice states: “At this time, registration for the Level 4 is FULL. Please add your name to the WAITLIST, and we will reach out as additional spots open up.” CrossFit adds that “Due to the one-on-one nature of the program, we are accepting a limited number of candidates. Registration will close once spots are filled, with additional spots opening as candidates complete the process.” The site also includes an administrative line for existing purchasers: “If you have already purchased this course, access it HERE.”
The announcement sits alongside other CrossFit professional development material that CrossFit lists as pre-approved credit sources. The Certifications section highlights The Knowledge Pro, described as “a virtual Coach Development cohort led by CrossFit Level 4 Coaches” that uses “weekly calls, homework, study materials, and assessments.” The Gymnastics Course appears with explicit credit listing: “The Gymnastics Course, Credits: 35.” The Coach Like a Pro (CLP) excerpt underlines practical group-class mastery as part of CrossFit’s broader PD framework. CrossFit’s pages reiterate: “CrossFit Professional Development: All CrossFit educational courses and activities are pre-approved… See the Candidate Handbook for a complete description of each category and complete instructions on how to receive credit for each course or activity.”
Several specifics remain unstated in the public snippets: the exact day in late February when the announcement was posted, the Assessment Phase task list, the identities of the “six primary domains,” cohort size as a numeric cap, pricing, and the detailed rubric or passing thresholds used by the Level 4 Evaluation Team. CrossFit’s Candidate Handbook is cited as the place for full descriptions and credit instructions, and the organization says additional spots will open as candidates complete the process. Coaches targeting CF-L4 should note the full-registrations status and the stated two-to-three-hours-per-week, four-to-six-week commitment as they plan next steps.
