Jayson Hopper’s withdrawal did more than remove the reigning Fittest Man on Earth from Mayhem Classic. It immediately loosened one of the tightest qualifying races on the 2026 CrossFit Games calendar, where only three men’s spots were available in Cookeville, Tennessee.

Hopper pulled out two days before competition, telling Mayhem organizers he needed to step away because of a nagging groin injury. That leaves the first in-person Semifinal of the season, set for April 17-19, without the athlete many fans would have penciled in as the headliner from the start. Mayhem Classic still carries weight: CrossFit’s schedule lists it as a direct path to the Games, with three qualifying spots for men and three for women on the line.

The opening is meaningful because the field around Hopper was already packed with proven names. Jeff Adler, Roman Khrennikov, Austin Hatfield, and Colten Mertens were among the confirmed men, and Hopper’s exit shifts the competitive math toward them. Hatfield entered 2026 after ranking first in the North America East Quarterfinals, while Mertens topped the North America West Quarterfinals. Adler brings former-champion pedigree, and Khrennikov has long been one of the most dangerous late-round threats in the sport. With Hopper out, the pressure rises on every heat and every point because there is one fewer heavy favorite to absorb the field’s attention.

The withdrawal also clarifies Hopper’s season plan. Rather than force a return onto the floor at Mayhem, he is aiming to recover in time for Syndicate Crown, which CrossFit has scheduled for May 29-31 in Knoxville, Tennessee. That event also offers three men’s and three women’s qualifying spots, making it a second major lane to the 2026 Games. Hopper is protecting that route instead of risking a compromised performance now.

That calculation matters because Hopper is not just any late scratch. CrossFit’s 2025 Games recap shows he won the title of Fittest Man on Earth last season, finished the 2025 Open in sixth place, qualified through the In-Affiliate Semifinals, and sealed the title by just 6 points. Removing a reigning champion from the first weekend changes how the rest of the season is read, too, especially with the Semifinals calendar spreading quickly through Del Mar, Busan, Birmingham, Paris, Brisbane, and Johannesburg.

Mayhem Classic was already a survivor’s event after a wave of invite declines and a field built around 20 men and 20 women. Hopper’s exit makes it even more fluid. The path to the Games is still open, but the hierarchy at the front just got a lot less certain.
