Dark Horse and D&D Beyond release free Dungeons & Dragons: Magefall comic

Dark Horse and D&D Beyond have put Dungeons & Dragons: Magefall into fans’ hands as a free digital comic, giving anyone who missed Free Comic Book Day another shot at the issue without hunting down a shop copy. The download is being framed as a Dungeons & Dragons graphic story from Dark Horse Comics, and D&D Beyond describes it as a prologue to a larger tale, not a throwaway giveaway.

Magefall puts Mordenkainen at the center of the action, pitting the veteran wizard against an aspect of a dragon god in a clash with the fate of the Forgotten Realms on the line. That setup gives the comic immediate pull for readers who follow Faerûn’s deeper lore, especially since Mordenkainen remains one of D&D’s most recognizable legacy spellcasters. D&D Beyond’s own lore notes cast him as a human wizard from Oerth whose wanderlust and hunger for new magic carry him across the multiverse, calculating and mysterious, but not cruel. The story’s stakes, and its use of a figure tied to Gary Gygax’s own play history, make this feel like a real chapter in D&D canon rather than a one-off promo image.

The credit list reinforces that sense of weight. Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing wrote the comic, Alessandro Miracolo handled the art, Valentina Taddeo did the colors, and Haley Rose-Lyon provided the lettering. D&D Beyond has also said more information on what comes next will arrive at San Diego Comic Con, which suggests Magefall is meant to tee up a wider reveal instead of standing alone.

The release also fits into a bigger publishing pattern. Free Comic Book Day 2026 landed on May 2, and Dark Horse’s official Dungeons & Dragons giveaway for that day ran 32 pages and carried a 14-plus rating. Dark Horse and Wizards of the Coast also announced a new publishing program in 2024 covering comics, graphic novels, art books, and more beginning in 2025. Dark Horse has already followed that lane with Dungeons & Dragons: The Fallbacks in 2025 and a new four-issue Dungeons & Dragons: Ravenloft series due to launch with issue No. 1 on August 19, 2026.

Magefall is the kind of free official release that works on two levels: it is an easy download for anyone who missed the giveaway table, and it is another signal that D&D’s biggest names are being positioned for a longer comics run. For fans keeping score at the table, this one looks less like a handout and more like the next roll in a bigger campaign.
