Sleepy Eye Brewing wins two awards at Minnesota Brewers Cup
Sleepy Eye Brewing outdueled bigger-name Minnesota breweries, taking gold for Salsa Dancing and silver for FIVE: Barley Wine in a blind statewide competition.

Sleepy Eye Brewing turned a statewide blind tasting into a hometown breakthrough, winning two medals against a field of more than 350 entries from more than 70 breweries and brewpubs across Minnesota. The small taproom in Sleepy Eye took first place in Spice, Herb & Vegetable Beers for Salsa Dancing and second place in Pale Strong Beers for FIVE: Barley Wine, a result that carried real weight because the beers were judged against BJCP style standards rather than by name recognition or market size.
The Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild announced the awards at an industry-only ceremony in Bloomington on April 10. The guild’s Brewers Cup is designed as a blind taste-test competition for Minnesota breweries and brewpubs, and the 2026 event spread submissions across 18 categories. In a field that also produced major honors for Back Channel Brewing as Brewery of the Year and Utepils Brewing’s Ewald the Golden as Best in Show, Sleepy Eye Brewing’s double finish stood out as a reminder that technical brewing skill can travel well beyond the Twin Cities.

For brewer Arron Luebbert, the medals were more than a trophy case addition. He said the recognition reflected the team’s commitment to making high-quality beer and brought attention to a small community that can benefit from beer tourism and local traffic. That matters in Sleepy Eye, where the brewery operates out of the historic Pix Theater and depends on both regular taproom business and the kind of destination visits that medals can create.
The winning beers are already set up to draw attention. Salsa Dancing is available on tap or in crowlers at the Pix Theater, while FIVE: Barley Wine is being poured for a limited time. For drinkers who track competition results as a quality marker, the first-place finish gives Salsa Dancing an immediate calling card, and the silver medal for FIVE: Barley Wine reinforces that the brewery can make strong beer with staying power.
The 2026 result also built on a clear track record. Sleepy Eye Brewing’s Five-Barley Wine placed third in the strong beer category in 2025, when the beer was brewed to celebrate the brewery’s five-year anniversary. The brewery also finished third in the 2022 fruit beer category and third in the 2021 amber lager category, making this year’s pair of wins look less like a fluke and more like the latest step in a steady run of competition success.
