Perni-Haze had more than 31,500 check-ins on Untappd before it ever had a badge for 2026. As of April 1, it has both.

Wicked Weed Brewing's Asheville-born hazy IPA is at the center of a new Untappd badge campaign running through December 31, 2026. The earn mechanic is low-friction by design: one check-in of Perni-Haze at any taproom, bottle shop, or event during the nine-month window locks the Perni-Haze IPA 2026 badge to your profile. Untappd published the announcement on March 31. The Perni-Haze badge is one of three running simultaneously across the Perni family this year, with separate badges also live for Pernicious IPA and Imperial Perni-Haze through the same December 31 cutoff.

Wicked Weed built Perni-Haze as the hazy counterpart to Pernicious, its flagship West Coast IPA, which is dry-hopped with nearly twice the hops typical of the style. Perni-Haze runs the same Citra and Simcoe foundation through a hazier, juicier approach: Citra pushes mango and passionfruit aromatics up front, and Simcoe anchors the profile with piney, resinous depth. The beer rates 3.9 out of 5 on Untappd and has drawn scores as high as 4.35 on BeerAdvocate, where reviewers consistently note its "citrusy, tropical, juicy" character and low-bitterness finish.

This is not Wicked Weed's first run at the badge-as-marketing mechanic. The "Stay Unfazed with Perni-Haze" badge ran from May through early September 2024, and a Pernicious Family badge covering all three beers ran March through December 2025. The 2026 campaign extends that window by two months over the 2024 standalone Perni-Haze badge, giving the beer nine months of platform-level visibility across Wicked Weed's full distribution footprint in the Carolinas and wherever the nationally sold Perni Variety Pack reaches shelves.

The strategy exposes how badges function as behavioral levers beyond simple awareness. A drinker who has already had Perni-Haze now has a concrete reason to log it rather than just drink it. Someone encountering a friend's earned-badge notification for the first time sees a social recommendation with a low barrier to replication. Both actions feed the same outcome: keg requests at bars, movement at bottle shops, and sustained search volume on the platform across an entire selling season rather than a single launch weekend.

Homebrew clubs and small-production taprooms can adapt the mechanic directly. A club running a quarterly style competition can issue a digital stamp to members who log a qualifying batch within a defined window, building urgency around a shared deadline. A taproom can build a flight checklist across three rotating handles, rewarding check-ins with a complimentary fourth pour and driving both dwell time and return visits. The critical design principle is pairing a minimal action with a hard end date: open-ended challenges lose the time pressure that sends someone out specifically to find a keg before the window closes.

The risk is baked into the formula. When badge campaigns push check-in volume toward a beer that can't hold up under scrutiny, the ratings accumulate right alongside the complaints, and the social amplification works in reverse. Perni-Haze sidesteps that exposure because its 31,500-check-in track record predates this campaign by years. A brewery using a badge launch to prop up a first-batch release with no established review history is making a different bet entirely.

For homebrewers watching the Citra-Simcoe pairing cycle back into the spotlight through this campaign, the combination is worth benchmarking. The two hops dominate modern NEIPA recipes because they complement rather than compete: Citra's fruit-forward brightness against Simcoe's earthy resin produces the balanced juiciness that Perni-Haze reviewers keep returning to describe. With nine months of badge window still open, tracking down a pint is a straightforward way to calibrate what that pairing looks like at commercial scale.
