Asphalt Legends Unite brings Sonic back for anniversary crossover

Sonic the Hedgehog has returned to Asphalt Legends Unite, and this time Gameloft is leaning hard into the question live games always ask of a repeat crossover: can the second lap still feel special? The anniversary event runs until July 21 and brings back Collector Mode, the ring-gathering race setup that fits Sonic’s speed-first identity as neatly as a nitro line through a straightaway.

The new run builds on a format that already worked once. The first Sonic x Asphalt Legends Unite collaboration, Racing Around the World, ran from May 29 to June 26, 2025 and centered on ring-collecting gameplay tied to Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Shadow, Dr. Eggman and Chao content. A year later, the game is not reinventing the crossover so much as widening the frame around it.

This time, the event adds returning Sonic- and Amy Rose-themed decals, plus a free Chao decal for every player. It also layers in featured car skins that assign specific vehicles to specific characters: the SSC Ultimate Aero TT for Sonic, the Apex AP-0 for Knuckles and the W Motors Lykan HyperSport Neon Edition for Amy. The 2026 event also includes a new Amy Rose decal for the Lykan HyperSport Neon Edition, which gives the crossover a fresh cosmetic beat even as it revisits the same basic structure.

The mode list is rounded out by returning boss-mode challenges, along with new and returning music and other visual touches meant to make the event feel like a full seasonal package rather than a single branded skin drop. That matters in a game like Asphalt Legends Unite, where spectacle is part of the pitch and licensed crossovers work best when they feel woven into the race rather than pasted on top of it.

Sega’s timing makes the choice even clearer. In January 2026, the company marked the year as Sonic the Hedgehog’s 35th anniversary and framed it as a broad celebratory stretch. Bringing Sonic back into Asphalt Legends Unite fits that plan neatly, while giving Gameloft a recognizable hook for players who may have already cleared the first crossover and need one more reason to jump back in.

For Asphalt Legends Unite, the return of Sonic is less a novelty than a live-ops signal. The game is treating crossover content as a repeatable seasonal engine, and Sonic remains one of the cleanest ways to turn that engine over again without losing the sense of speed that makes the series work.
