Clash Royale's 10th Anniversary Update Adds Heroes, Revamps Progression in Season 81

Ten years in, Supercell isn't coasting. The Season 81 update that landed March 2 rewired how Clash Royale players move through Trophy Road, dropped two new Heroes into the arena, and kicked off a collectible Album Event with a free hero waiting at the finish line.

The headline progression change is straightforward but meaningful: Trophy Road now offers reward choices on select tiers rather than locking players into predetermined loot. The first tier presents four options; every other choice tier offers two. Supercell spelled out the intent plainly: "If you don't need any Gold right now, you'll be able to choose a different reward, like random cards, instead of claiming a Gold Crate. This gives you more control over your progression and helps you tailor rewards to what you need most." Four new Trophy Road Arenas also arrived with the March 2 rollout, extending the ladder itself.

The two new Heroes are Hero Barbarian Barrel, whose "Rowdy Reroll" ability sends him barreling down the lane a second time for another crack at clearing enemy troops, and Hero Magic Archer, whose ability is called "Triple Threat." Both became accessible starting at Arena 5 following a February 23 change that preceded the main update.

The Album Event is where the anniversary theme gets its most concrete reward structure. Players have until April 6 to collect all 81 snippets, which piece together nine-scene tableaus from the game's history. Each scene consists of nine pieces at varying rarities. Completing Scene 1 pays out 3 Royal Hogs Evolution Shards; Scene 3 gives 1 Epic Chest; Scene 5 delivers 80 Rare Wild Cards; Scene 7 awards a 5-Star Lucky Chest; Scene 9 yields a 5-Star Evolution Box. Finish the entire album and the grand prize is Hero Magic Archer, an emote, and the "Just Joust" Tower Skin.

Pass Royale also got reworked on March 2, adding personalized rewards and more options for subscribers. Lucky Chests saw a quality-of-life improvement on February 23 with fewer max-level duplicates in the loot pool. On the quality-of-life front more broadly, matchmaking now skips bad decks, troops hold their lanes even after towers fall, crystal balances display clearly in the Shop, and a Level 11 stats button was added. Bug fixes addressed Sparky retaining charge after a Hero Knight taunt, Tornado failing to pull the Phoenix Egg and Monk correctly, Mega Draft Spirit Empress not functioning in both forms, and Mirror displaying incorrect levels on low-rarity Legendaries and Champions.

A second wave of changes is still incoming. Supercell confirmed a mid-March follow-up that brings "Choose Your Heroes," eliminating the random summoning system so players can select exactly which Hero they unlock. That update also renames Hero Fragments to Hero Coins, includes a free Hero unlock, and restructures deck slots to one Evolution slot, one Hero slot, and one Wild slot.

Supercell framed the full run of updates as a sustained celebration: "Today's update, and the next few to come, celebrate that journey with brand-new events and meaningful gameplay changes." For a game that launched in 2016 and built its identity around three-minute ladder matches, the progression overhaul may matter more than any single new card. Giving players agency over their Trophy Road rewards is a structural change, and the mid-March patch will determine how far that philosophy extends into the Hero unlock system.
