Google dropped a significant package of gaming updates at GDC 2026 this week, announcing Game Trials, a dedicated PC section in the Play Store, cross-platform "Buy once, play anywhere" pricing, Community Posts, and the Gemini-powered Play Games Sidekick overlay, all aimed at turning Google Play into a more complete gaming destination.

Game Trials is the headline feature, giving players free access to select paid games before committing to a purchase. Games that support the feature display a "Try" button on their Play Store pages, and tapping it shows exactly how long the trial lasts. Progress made during a trial carries over seamlessly if the player decides to buy. The rollout begins on mobile for select paid titles, with support for Google Play Games on PC to follow at a later stage. Sources differ slightly on the scope of access, with some describing trials as the full game for a limited period while others characterize it as a portion of the game; Google has not clarified that distinction publicly.

The "Buy once, play anywhere" pricing model addresses one of the more persistent friction points for players who move between devices. A single purchase on Google Play now unlocks both the mobile and PC versions of supported titles. The feature launches with the Reigns series, OTTTD, and Dungeon Clawler as the initial examples, with no broad availability date announced beyond those select titles.

For PC-focused players, Google added a dedicated section to the Play Store's Games tab highlighting titles optimized for Windows. Users can wishlist games in that section and receive notifications when they go on sale or become available. The PC hub connects directly to Google Play Games, which first launched in 2022 and officially exited beta on September 23, 2025.

On the catalog side, Google said it's expanding its library of paid games in the coming months, naming Moonlight Peaks, Sledding Game, 9 Kings, Potion Craft, and Low-Budget Repairs as upcoming additions. All of those titles will be playable on both mobile and PC through Google Play Games, with a Gamer Profile syncing progress across devices.

Community Posts, already live in English for dozens of popular games, lets players ask questions and share tips directly on a game's Play Store page, a move Google is clearly positioning as a way to pull community conversation away from platforms like Reddit. The AI side of that equation comes from Play Games Sidekick, an in-game overlay powered by Gemini that surfaces tips and tools without requiring players to leave the game. It currently works as an overlay within compatible Android games, with select title support also noted for the broader Play Games environment.

Google claimed around 160 million players use the Play Store's You tab each month to track games and activity, a figure that provides the backdrop for why the company is investing this heavily in the platform's social and discovery infrastructure. With the library expansion and trial rollout ongoing, the Play Store's transformation from a simple storefront into something closer to a gaming hub is clearly the direction Google is pushing toward.
