Paizo Updates Sanctioning, Boons, and Ownership Rules for Organized Play
Paizo expanded digital ownership proof and tightened Legacy Admittance boon language, changing how GMs validate players at sanctioned tables starting April 9.

Alex Speidel's April 9 Organized Play monthly update changed the proof-of-ownership rules that determine what players can legally bring to sanctioned Pathfinder Society and Starfinder Society tables worldwide, and the changes took effect immediately.
The most operationally significant shift is to what Paizo now accepts as evidence of ownership. Speidel announced that Paizo was "expanding the ownership requirements" so that players may satisfy the rule with either a physical copy of a book or proof of purchase of a digital edition: an official Paizo PDF, a licensed VTT conversion, or a digital adaptation. Either form of ownership must be paired with a copy of the rules being referenced, which can include electronic access to the Pathfinder Reference Document or Pathfinder Nexus. Players previously grandfathered under old boon-based access will not be forced to repurchase anything.
For Venture Officers and GMs running check-in at a convention or local store event, this means confirming a digital receipt or active VTT license is now as valid as a physical book sitting on the table. The enforcement question shifts from "did you bring the book?" to "can you show proof of purchase?", and event organizers should update their check-in procedures before the next scheduled session. Paizo Plus purchases and licensed digital adaptations fall squarely inside the new language, so players who moved to fully digital collections have formal standing for the first time.
Sanctioning for Starfinder Galactic Ancestries and Pathfinder Lost Omens Hellfire Dispatches went live alongside the update, available now on each program's respective character options pages. Both titles are immediately legal for character creation at sanctioned tables, meaning GMs can field characters from either book without waiting on a future update cycle.
The update also rewrote Legacy Admittance boon language. Those boons now "specifically grant access to all feats and heritages associated with that ancestry in their original printing, but not the full ancestry." The narrowed scope addresses a concrete cross-system problem: the android ancestry works differently in Pathfinder than it does in Starfinder, and the previous wording was broad enough to create genuine ambiguity about which version a boon unlocked. The revision closes that gap at the source.
Looking ahead, digital adventures for event-run tables are scheduled for release on May 6, 2026. That date is the planning anchor for any VO or convention coordinator building their May calendar: table counts, GM recruitment, and player pre-registration should all be structured around that release window.
Any VO who hasn't updated local event documentation to reflect the new ownership language should do it this week, well before the May 6 drop gives players new content to bring to the table.
