Two new outdoor pickleball courts at Trophy Gardens RV Resort were dedicated in memory of Brenda Keen, turning a long-held resident vision into a tangible amenity that expands play space and strengthens community ties. The dedication ceremony on January 13 drew a large turnout of players and Winter Texans and featured the unveiling of a sign reading the Brenda Keen Courts by Brenda’s husband, Mike, and park Manager Dan Rockwood.

The courts are the result of collaboration between park residents and management, with volunteer labor and donations helping move the project from idea to reality. Resident and player Glyn Missingill emceed the dedication and noted that many residents had provided sweat equity and financial contributions to make the courts possible. Rockwood invited attendees “to look and see what we accomplished.”

Pickleball at Trophy Gardens traces back to 2015, when residents used two indoor courts in the main hall. Resident Fran Adams recalled that the hall had to be shared with other activities, which limited playing time. “...The sport had become one of the most popular activities in the park, bringing residents together for exercise, social connection and fun,” Adams said. The indoor constraints and growing demand created momentum for a dedicated outdoor home, a need Brenda Keen had championed. Brenda had been an avid player who pushed for outdoor courts, saying, "We need our own outdoor pickleball courts."

Following the dedication, several pairs of players demonstrated play on the new surfaces, offering an immediate example of how the amenity will be used for fitness and friendly competition. The outdoor courts free up the main hall for other programming while providing residents more flexibility for daytime play and, eventually, evening sessions.

Some work remains before the courts are fully outfitted. Additional funds are still needed to install benches for players and spectators, proper lighting for evening play, and overhead coverage to protect against sun and rain. Although Brenda Keen passed away suddenly in June of 2024, her advocacy and the community’s response have ensured the courts stand as a lasting tribute to her passion for the sport.

For Trophy Gardens residents and visiting Winter Texans, the Brenda Keen Courts expand opportunities for exercise, socializing, and organized play. Park leaders and volunteers will continue fundraising and finishing touches in the weeks ahead, turning the courts from a commemorative dedication into a daily hub for play and community.
