USA Pickleball wins San Diego award for championship tourism impact

USA Pickleball’s San Diego honor was about far more than medals and brackets. Sports San Diego named the organization Special Event of the Year in the Rising Tide Awards after the 2025 USA Pickleball National Championships turned Barnes Tennis Center into a nine-day destination event that drew more than 2,500 athletes, nearly 4,000 matches and over 10,000 attendees.

For pickleball travelers, that is the difference between a standard tournament trip and one worth building a vacation around. The 2025 Nationals, held November 15-23 in San Diego, also generated an estimated $3 million in economic impact for the region, logged more than 2,100 volunteer hours and reached a reported global audience of 1.35 billion through media coverage and social channels. Players came from 47 states and 20 countries, giving the event the kind of mix that makes a championship feel larger than a local stop on the calendar.

The venue mattered just as much as the numbers. USA Pickleball and Sports San Diego pointed to Barnes Tennis Center’s expansion to 50 permanent courts as a major reason the site stood out, and the facility’s profile as San Diego’s premier racket sports destination gives it a rare edge for travel players who want scale, organization and atmosphere in one place. Barnes also hosts tennis, pickleball and padel, which helps explain why the championship fit there and why the city could sell the event as a true sports tourism draw, not just a niche gathering.

Sports San Diego CEO Mark Neville said the event reflected the excellence, energy and economic benefit the Rising Tide Awards are meant to recognize, while USA Pickleball CEO Mike Nealy said the honor showed the strength of the community and the sport’s continued growth. The organization has already confirmed that the 2026 USA Pickleball National Championships will return to Barnes Tennis Center from October 31 through November 8, 2026, giving destination players a clear marker for a trip that combines top-level play with one of Southern California’s strongest travel backdrops.

That combination is what sets a championship vacation apart. Hotels, restaurants, volunteers, local partners and broadcast exposure all got pulled into the Nationals’ orbit in 2025, and the award signals that cities now see pickleball at this scale as an asset worth competing for.
