Virginia Beach is about to get something the local pickleball scene has not had before: a dedicated indoor home built for play in every season. Palace of Pickleball is moving into the Timberlake Shopping Center at 4239 Holland Road, Suite 764, with seven premium courts in a climate-controlled space designed to keep games going when beach weather turns hot, windy or wet.

That indoor reliability is the big travel story. Virginia Beach already has a sizable outdoor footprint, with Pickleheads listing 25 locations and 172 courts across the city, and the city’s Parks and Recreation department running an adult pickleball ladder league at Bayside Recreation Center. Even so, the arrival of a purpose-built indoor venue changes the calculus for players who want a dependable weekend or shoulder-season trip without watching the forecast.

The venue’s operators say the goal is more than court time. Palace of Pickleball will offer open play, leagues, tournaments and private or corporate events, and membership will be available but not required. The business also plans a party room and a coastal aesthetic, aiming for a social, destination-style feel rather than a plain rec center. Its public materials describe it as Virginia Beach’s first-ever dedicated indoor pickleball facility and promise a polished, immersive experience for players at every level.

Owner Lisa Cardona said she was drawn to pickleball because of the way it brings people together, and she saw a gap in the market because the area did not have dedicated indoor courts. That gap matters in Hampton Roads, where outdoor play can be interrupted by weather and where beginners often need a controlled place to learn without fighting wind or rain on day one.

The timing lines up with a fast-growing sport. USA Pickleball says its court-location database added more than 2,300 locations in 2025, bringing the national total to 18,258 locations. The Sports & Fitness Industry Association says U.S. participation climbed from about 4.2 million players in 2020 to more than 24 million in 2025. In that kind of market, indoor courts are becoming a serious piece of the infrastructure.

Palace of Pickleball is targeting a soft opening at the end of April or beginning of May, followed by a grand opening. Once it opens, the facility will run Monday through Sunday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., giving Virginia Beach a new all-weather option in a region already deep in pickleball but still waiting for a true indoor anchor.
