Vybz Kartel has been confirmed to headline the inaugural Talanta East Afrika Festival, organisers announced at a Nairobi press conference, with the regional tour scheduled for May 1 at Lugogo Cricket Oval in Kampala, May 2 at BK Arena in Kigali, and May 8 at Laureate Gardens in Nairobi. The festival, billed as a multi-city cultural showcase, names the Jamaican dancehall icon as its lead international act for the inaugural run.

"The announcement was made on Tuesday, 3 March 2026, during a press conference in Nairobi," organisers noted at the launch, a date reported by local outlets The-star and Standardmedia. An original report carrying the announcement was published March 5, 2026, reflecting the press conference rollout and subsequent regional coverage.

Bushington of Tunez Records Uganda framed the event as more than a series of concerts, saying the festival "is about more than entertainment," and describing it as "a platform created to unite East Africans through music, culture and shared identity, while showcasing the region’s creative energy to global audiences." Co-organiser Mayanja Jackson said the project "is structured as a sustainable cultural movement rather than a one-off event," and highlighted plans for ongoing cross-border programming.

Organisers confirmed several operational commitments: "100 per cent of the festival workforce in each country will be sourced locally," and the programme is aimed at younger audiences, with a stated target demographic of ages 18 to 35. They also said the festival "will leverage social media platforms ahead of the May tour" to drive promotion and ticketing outreach, and expect the initiative to "drive tourism, create local employment and stimulate fashion, food and nightlife sectors in each host city."

Beyond Kartel, the announcement named Kenyan musician Charisma among the East African artists expected to perform, with organisers saying more regional acts will be revealed ahead of the tour. Local reporting noted that Kartel's music "enjoys a strong following in Kenya," a factor organisers cited in selecting Nairobi as the tour's final leg on May 8 at Laureate Gardens.

Media elements around the launch included The-star's coverage with an image and an audio player credited to Vocalize, and social posts that echoed the headliner confirmation. Organisers have not yet released ticketing, pricing or venue capacity details for the May dates; those operational items remain pending official festival materials.

If the festival delivers on the organisers' stated priorities of local hiring and sustained cross-border programming, Talanta East Afrika Festival will test the claim that a single regional tour can boost tourism, create jobs and elevate East African creative industries across three capital cities in early May. Organisers say the long-term goal "is to build a regional platform that consistently elevates East African creativity and strengthens cross-border cultural exchange.
