Mainmatter to host hands-on Rust workshop in Barcelona upskilling week

Mainmatter will bring a two-day, hands-on Rust workshop to Barcelona’s Upskilling Week, giving attendees guided practice on ownership, borrowing, async programming and testing instead of another pass through scattered tutorials. The session, Learn Rust from Scratch, will be led by Magnus Markling during the citywide training program at Cibernàrium 22@.

Upskilling Week Barcelona 2026 will run from June 29 to July 2 at Cibernàrium 22@, Barcelona Activa’s technology training hub, with sessions scheduled from 15:00 to 20:00. The program is a new initiative from the Mobile World Capital Foundation in collaboration with Barcelona Activa, and a Catalan government-backed briefing said it will include more than twenty training proposals. Mainmatter’s Rust workshop is set for June 29 and 30, and participants will be able to join both days or pick either day.

The course is built for people with no prior Rust knowledge, which makes it an on-ramp rather than a refresher. Mainmatter says its broader Learn Rust, starting from scratch workshop is a four-day course that begins at the absolute basics and grows toward more advanced material, and the Barcelona version will lean on an interactive format with exercises, automated checks and one-on-one guidance from trainers. That is the part that matters for self-taught developers: the workshop is designed to surface ownership mistakes, borrowing misunderstandings and async problems in real time, not leave them hidden until a later project fails.

Completers will receive a Rust Foundation Workshop Completion Badge through Credly, and the Barcelona sessions will be the first issuance of that badge. The credential gives the workshop a concrete professional finish, turning the learning into something that can be shown on a profile or to an employer. Mainmatter’s Rust work already reaches beyond beginner training, with the company teaching Rust for API services, workers, data pipelines, native extensions and WASM, and organizing EuroRust, the two-day conference for the European Rust community.

The workshop also fits Mainmatter’s long place in the Rust ecosystem.
