Sims 4 Hotfix Restores Custom Content and Fixes Launch Crashes
A March 23 hotfix fixed CC loading and launch crashes triggered by patch 1.122, but players still running into issues should do a vanilla test and check ReShade.

The Sims 4 Team pushed a new update on March 23, 2026 (PC build 1.122.218.1030 / Mac build 1.122.218.1230) to fix CC and mod users still encountering problems launching the game, with the team confirming that all custom content should now load and work as expected.
The trouble began with the March 17 patch, when players first reported not being able to see their custom content and mods in-game. EA promised a fix the following day, but the March 18 hotfix made the situation worse for some players by not allowing them to open the game at all. Those who tried to launch were hitting a "Failed to Launch" message, stopping at a completely black screen with no words, or managing to load in only to find CC missing from their game.
According to The Sims Team's own report, the issue affected approximately 2% of the player base, though forum reaction made clear the figure didn't capture the breadth of frustration. The problem persisted for players who had updated with both the March 17 and March 18 updates, with some reporting they couldn't even run the 50-50 mod test to identify the culprit because the game refused to open at all.
The March 23 update was, in effect, a hotfix for a hotfix, addressing crashing and launch issues caused by the two previous updates released earlier that same month. The specific fix addressed a crash-on-launch that targeted players using specific types of custom content under certain circumstances. EA also resolved an issue that caused a main menu message to appear more frequently than intended.
Forum moderator luthienrising, a Hero+ contributor on the EA Mods and Custom Content board, has been running a dedicated tracking thread throughout the chaos. The thread documents mods and CC broken or made obsolete by game update 1.122 and every hotfix that followed, while also tracking creator-issued updates, general creator news, and new bugfix mods. The thread is an essential bookmark while the dust settles.

If the March 23 hotfix still hasn't resolved things on your end, the guidance from the EA forums is specific: "A patch for these specific issues was released March 23, 2026. If you have them, please update. If you still have them after that, it's possible that there are other causes. Please do a vanilla test. If the issue persists, please update your ReShade; if you don't use that or other mods that aren't Mods-folder content, go to the Bug Reports forum."
It's also worth noting that news for mods and CC hosted on Mod the Sims may be selective or delayed due to recent security incidents, a reference to the March 2026 malware incident at that site flagged in the forum's resource list. Backing up your Saves folder is also strongly recommended before running any further troubleshooting, given community reports of corrupted saves lingering after the initial crash wave.
The March 23 update weighs in at around 112MB on Mac. It's available now through the EA App, Steam, and Epic Games launchers, with automatic updates pushing it to anyone who has that setting enabled.
