An anonymous tip finally pushed the 2019 killing of Adrian Real out of the cold-case file and into an arrest, giving Santa Ana police a new break in the death of the 20-year-old Los Amigos High School graduate and his family’s dog.

Police said a suspect was taken into custody on April 21 after years of unsolved work on the homicide. The name has not been released, and investigators are still sorting out motive and any relationship between the suspect and Real.

The killing unfolded in the early morning hours of November 22, 2019, when officers were called to the Waterstone Park Apartments on North Bristol Street after reports of gunfire. Real was found in the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

The violence did not stop there. Real’s family dog was also struck in the shooting and later died at a veterinary hospital, a detail that has made the case especially painful for the victim’s relatives and more haunting for anyone tracking the long road of the investigation.

For years, detectives worked the homicide without an arrest. That changed when an anonymous tip from the public gave investigators a new path forward, enough to move the case from dormant to active and result in the suspect’s custody. Police have not yet publicly laid out the exact evidence that connected the suspect to the shooting, but they said the tip helped reopen momentum in a case that had gone unsolved for years.

The arrest is the kind of development cold-case followers watch for closely: a named victim, a long gap between murder and arrest, and one public lead that can finally turn a stalled investigation. In Real’s case, the detail that his family dog was also killed only deepened the brutality of the crime and the sense that this was never just a single-victim homicide.

Police still have to answer the larger questions that have followed this case since 2019, including why Real was targeted and what role, if any, the suspect had in his death. For now, the arrest marks the first major movement in a killing that had sat unresolved for years.
