Barry Christian’s disappearance ended in a grim discovery at Sandy Sanders Wildlife Management Area, where Beckham County deputies found his truck and his body inside it, turning a missing-person case into a high-profile investigation with political stakes across Oklahoma Senate District 38.

Christian, 54, lived in Sayre and was running as a Republican for the District 38 seat. He was one of three Republicans on the ballot with Joe Buchanan and Rick Vernon, with the June 16 primary and Nov. 3 general election still on the calendar when his body was found on Thursday, April 30, 2026.

The timeline that brought investigators to the rural wildlife area began two days earlier. Christian was last seen in Sayre on Tuesday, April 28, and was reported missing after he failed to appear for a scheduled meeting. Authorities believed he had been driving a charcoal gray 2024 Dodge Ram pickup, and the search widened as deputies looked for both the truck and the candidate.

That truck was later located near Erick, in the Sandy Sanders Wildlife Management Area, several miles from the Texas border in far western Oklahoma. KOCO reported the vehicle was found in a ravine, while other reporting said a hunter spotted the truck inside the wildlife area. The discovery tied together the missing-person reports, the abandoned vehicle, and the body found in the truck, giving investigators their first clear scene to process.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said the case was requested by the Sayre Police Department and remained active as agents worked to determine where Christian was between the last confirmed sighting in Sayre and the discovery at the wildlife area. So far, officials have not publicly identified a cause of death or named any persons of interest. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has not released a ruling, leaving open the question of whether Christian’s death was accidental, natural, or criminal.

Christian’s death has also rippled through the campaign itself. Joe Buchanan said he and his wife were devastated by Christian’s passing, and Christian’s daughter, Brooklyn, asked for privacy as the family tried to understand what happened. The political race remains on the books, but the immediate focus is now on the search area, the vehicle, and the evidence inside a case that could still shift sharply once the medical examiner’s findings are released.
