Oxnard woman arrested on murder charge after one-day-old son's death
An Oxnard mother, Marisol Flores, was arrested on a murder charge after her one-day-old son was found dead with a suspicious injury; the case is under active investigation.

Marisol Flores, 30, was arrested on a murder charge after a one-day-old infant she had just given birth to was found dead following a call to the 2400 block of East Vineyard Avenue. Emergency personnel responding to a report of a birth and medical complications discovered the newborn with no signs of life and pronounced the child dead. The investigation has been led by the Oxnard Police Department’s Family Protection Unit and Major Crimes Unit.
Police arrested Flores on Feb. 8 and booked her into Ventura County jail on suspicion of felony child abuse and murder. Jail records indicate she is being held on $100,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on Feb. 10. Investigators say they found additional evidence that led to the arrest; the investigation is ongoing and the coroner has not yet released an official cause and manner of death.
Oxnard Police Sgt. Carey Everhart said Flores “was found at a homeless encampment and a concerned person walking through the area called about the woman and her child.” He also said the boy’s injuries were “consistent blunt-force trauma.” First responders had reported observing a “suspicious injury” to the infant when they arrived and notified officers. Other elements of the injury have not been publicly detailed as the case proceeds.
There is a minor discrepancy in timeline details recorded in public accounts: some local records list the emergency response as taking place around 11 a.m. on Feb. 7, while other dispatch records reference a call just after 11 a.m. on Feb. 8. Arrest and booking records show Flores was arrested on Feb. 8. Reporters and investigators note such timing differences should be resolved with 911 logs and police releases as they become available.
This is the city’s first reported homicide in 2026 and it raises immediate community concerns about maternal health, emergency access, and the safety of people living in encampments. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact Detective Manuel Perez at 805-385-7719 or manny.perez@oxnardpd.org.
Separately, a different Oxnard infant death case reported in other accounts involves different suspects, different dates and a different hospital; that investigation is not connected to the Flores case. In that unrelated matter, investigators alleged a newborn was strangled about 12 hours after birth and the parents faced murder and child abuse charges.
What comes next for Flores’ case is a coroner’s report to clarify cause and manner of death, formal charging documents from the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, and a court appearance on Feb. 10. For now, officials urge anyone with tips or relevant evidence to contact police as investigators continue to piece together the circumstances of the newborn’s death.
