Police in Mukono recovered 25-year-old Uganda Christian University student Nathan Tuwandike after members of the public reported seeing him roaming Mukono Town on March 2 at about 2:00 pm, and officers took him into custody for further assessment, Kampala Metropolitan Police said. The sighting ended an eight-day absence that began when Tuwandike was last seen in Mukono Town on February 25.

Kampala Metropolitan Police, through KMP deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, had earlier appealed for help locating Tuwandike, identifying him as a resident of Nsibambi A11, Mukono District and saying he had left his phone and personal belongings at his hostel. “Mukono Police is investigating the disappearance of Tuwandike, 25, a student at Uganda Christian University and a resident of Nsibambi A11, Mukono District. He was last seen on February 25, 2026, in Mukono Town. He left behind his phone and personal belongings at his hostel,” Owoyesigyire said.

The initial public appeal asked anyone with information to contact the nearest police station or Mukono Police Station directly on 0783748109, a number repeated in police notices and media aggregators. “Owoyesigyire appealed to anyone with information about his whereabouts to report to the nearest police station or contact Mukono Police Station immediately on 0783748109,” the police statement said, and officials added that “Inquiries are ongoing.”

Nile Post reported the March 2 recovery and quoted ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police: “He is currently in safe custody as further assessments are being conducted.” According to Nile Post, police responded after members of the public spotted Tuwandike roaming in Mukono Town at about 2pm and “Police responded immediately and safely recovered him.”

Uganda Christian University issued a statement confirming the student’s return and reunion with family: “We are pleased to inform the university community and all UCU stakeholders that Nathan Tuwandike, a student pursuing a Bachelor of Nursing Sciences, has been found safe and sound. He has been successfully reunited with his family.” UCU also thanked those who supported the search, particularly the Uganda Police Force, and “urged students to continue looking out for one another ‘in the Christian spirit of being our brother’s and sister’s keeper.’”

Nile Post added that it “has independently established that Tuwandike was facing mental health challenge,” and noted that “neither the Police nor the university statements explained what happened to Tuwandike or why he had been missing since Wednesday, February 25.” Authorities have said further details will be communicated in due course as police complete assessments and ongoing inquiries.

Investigators, led by Mukono territorial police with oversight from Kampala Metropolitan Police, continue those inquiries while the student remains in safe custody for evaluation. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Mukono Police Station on 0783748109.
