Ryan Weeks identified in Smithville remains after 2022 disappearance

Human remains found in Smithville have now been identified as Ryan Weeks, turning a missing-person file that sat open for years into an active death investigation with a body, a name and still no explanation for what happened in between.

Smithville police said they reopened Weeks’s case in August 2025 after new information came in and led investigators back onto the trail. One of the first public steps was a search of a Northland pond with help from the Missouri State Highway Patrol dive team. Chief Jason Lockridge said at the time, “Our focus is to find answers for the family and our community.”

Weeks, 46, was last seen leaving a business on February 27, 2022. Police said he was homeless at the time, without a car or a phone. He reportedly told a friend the next day that he had been staying about 1.5 miles from a gas station, one of the few concrete details available from the early days of the case. A Smithville Police Department missing-person flyer had circulated earlier, asking the public to help locate him as the search stretched on with no confirmed resolution.

The reopened investigation eventually led detectives to human skeletal remains in Smithville. Those remains were examined by a forensic examiner and a team of anthropologists before being identified as Weeks. Police have not publicly laid out the exact path that connected the new lead to the remains, but they have said the discovery and the condition of the remains keep the case in criminal territory. The file remains active and ongoing.

Weeks’s family said they were notified in August 2025 that the case had been reopened and that several leads were pursued afterward, though none brought immediate clarity. They said they were told at one point that human remains had been discovered before identification was confirmed, underscoring how long the family lived between uncertainty and an answer.
