Turnstile Guitarist Charged With Attempted Murder After Hitting Bandmate's Father
Brady Ebert, 33, founding guitarist of Grammy-winning Turnstile, charged with attempted murder after allegedly driving into frontman Brendan Yates's 78-year-old father in Silver Spring.

Brady Ebert, the 33-year-old founding guitarist of Grammy-winning Baltimore hardcore band Turnstile, was arrested and charged with felony attempted second-degree murder and felony first-degree assault after allegedly driving his car into William Yates, the 78-year-old father of Turnstile frontman Brendan Yates, outside the family's Silver Spring, Maryland home.
The confrontation began on a Sunday afternoon at the Yates family home on Timberlake Drive. According to charging documents and surveillance footage reviewed by Montgomery County investigators, Ebert drove up to the property honking his horn and yelling obscenities. Family members were outside at the time. As Ebert's vehicle swerved toward him, William Yates backed into the driveway and threw a rock at the car. Ebert then reversed and cut sharply back into the driveway, striking Yates as he tried to run. Yates suffered severe trauma to his legs, including a broken bone that protruded through the skin. He has since undergone surgery.
Investigators secured an arrest warrant after reviewing the surveillance footage and identifying Ebert's vehicle. He was taken into custody two days after the incident and appeared before Montgomery County District Court Judge Sherri Koch, who ordered him held without bond. Koch described the allegations as "violent and targeted." A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 1 in Montgomery County District Court.
The charges reflect a prosecutorial theory of deliberate intent: the sequence of events captured on surveillance, specifically Ebert's reversal and sharp turn back into the driveway after the initial near-miss, gave investigators grounds to pursue attempted murder rather than reckless endangerment. His prior conduct provided additional context. Turnstile cut ties with Ebert in August 2022, citing "a consistent pattern of harmful behavior affecting himself, the band and the community." In a statement released this week, the band added that Ebert had "begun threatening violence" around the time of his departure from the group, and that those threats had "escalated further" in the months before the incident.
Ebert and Brendan Yates grew up together in Maryland and co-founded Turnstile in 2010. He served as the band's lead guitarist through their grassroots years and into the run-up to their commercial breakthrough, the 2021 album "Glow On," before departing a year after its release. Turnstile went on to win Grammy Awards for Best Rock Album and Best Metal Performance.
In a statement to WBAL, the band said Ebert "went to the house of Brendan's parents and used his vehicle to run over Brendan's father, causing severe physical trauma." The full statement added: "We are grateful that Mr. Yates survived, has successfully undergone surgery, and we're hoping for the best possible outcome in his recovery. We have no language left for Brady. Please respect our privacy at this time."
Ebert remains in custody as the case proceeds toward the May 1 hearing in Montgomery County District Court, where conditions of any potential bail and the shape of the prosecution's evidence will come into clearer focus.
