Team Luminare Scores Yellowfin Tuna Success Offshore Herradura, Costa Rica

Luminare Sport Fishing's Team Luminare returned from a full-day offshore run out of Playa Herradura on March 9 with yellowfin tuna as the primary target and mission accomplished, adding another entry to what has been a productive stretch of Pacific action for the Puntarenas Province-based charter.

The trip, logged on FishingBooker and tagged simply as "the Art of Tuna fishing," was a standard full-day offshore outing into the central Pacific waters that Luminare regularly works for yellowfin, billfish, wahoo, and mahi mahi. The charter pushes anywhere from 40 to 60 miles offshore from Herradura depending on the package and conditions, trolling the deep water where these fish hold. The timing places the outing outside the traditional peak window for the largest Central Pacific yellowfin, which typically runs June through September for fish in the 200-pound class. March yellowfin in this region tend to run smaller, though the species is present year-round from football-sized fish to those exceeding 40 pounds. The standard approach in these waters is trolling brightly colored lures, with yellow and red plastic skirts worked at 10 to 12 knots a proven starting point, though crews regularly mix in purple, green, and chrome jet heads depending on what the fish are responding to on a given day. Yellowfin will also take the same ballyhoo rigs used to target sailfish and marlin, which makes tactical crossover common on a multi-species day.
